Rowing wins Fawley Cup for the 28th time with a victory over Gonzaga

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. – The Washington State women's rowing team retained the Fawley Cup against Gonzaga Wednesday, April 12, as the Cougars won the trophy for the 28th time in program history to highlight the midweek regatta on Silver Lake.

WSU's first varsity 8+ crew won the head-to-head 2,000-meter race against Gonzaga's 1V8+ boat to hold onto the Fawley Cup. Washington State won a tightly contested race against the Bulldogs, as WSU clocked in at 6:36.26, finishing 1.63 seconds ahead of GU. The Cougars' victory on Silver Lake on Wednesday marks the 28th in the 31-year history of the Fawley Cup that WSU has won the trophy.

"Overall, the Cougs raced well today," said WSU Women's Rowing Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "We took a step in the right direction. The 1V8+ race was a gut check that we survived. Thanks to Gonzaga for hosting us."

A total of seven races were ran on Wednesday at the Johnson Family Boathouse on Silver Lake. The Cougs won the overall regatta against Gonzaga, as WSU picked up victories against the Bulldogs in the 1V8+, 2V8+, 3V8+, and 2V4+ races.

Washington State's 2V8+ crew posted a time of 6:53.07 to defeat GU's 2V8+ boat in a race that the Cougars finished 8.04 seconds ahead of Gonzaga. WSU's 3V8+ crew also captured a victory over the Bulldogs, as the Cougs won the 3V8+ race with a time of 7:17.93.

The Cougars' second varsity 4+ boat also collected a victory on Silver Lake, as WSU won the 2V4+ race in 7:40.94. WSU's 1V4+ crew took second to GU in its race, finishing with a time of 7:38.94, just 3.27 seconds behind the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga's 5V8+ crew captured a pair of wins over Washington State's novice eight A and novice eight B crews. The Bulldogs' 5V8 boat won the first race of the regatta against WSU's N8+ A boat, as the Cougars posted a time of 7:28.67. GU's 5V8 crew also captured a victory against Washington State's N8+ B boat, as the Cougars clocked in with a time of 7:59.97.

The Washington State rowing team will be back in action next weekend, as the Cougars make a cross-country trip to North Carolina to participate in the Lake Wheeler Invitational on April 21-22. Check back with WSUCougars.com for a full regatta preview.
