Track and field set to send top athletes to Mt SAC Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State men's and women's track and field teams will split up once again this weekend to compete in a trio of West Coast meets which include; the Mt SAC Relays (April 12-15) hosted in Walnut, Calif., the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 13-15) in Azusa, Calif., and the Whitworth Twilight (April 14) in Spokane, Wash.

Multi athletes will lead off four days of competition at the Mt SAC Relays on Wednesday while the three-day Bryan Clay Invitational is set to begin on Thursday.  The one-day Whitworth Twilight kicks off Thursday at 2 p.m. with the women's discus competition.

LAST TIME OUT (Whitworth Peace Meet):
Washington State tallied six wins and 15 top-three finishes last Friday at the Whitworth Peace Meet.  The Cougars tallied seven PR's and 11 season-best marks on a wet afternoon in Spokane that saw on-and-off showers.

Tara Koonce managed a persona-best mark of 55.04m in the hammer cage to win the event, freshman Laura Lindquist hit a personal-best mark (44.75m) to win the women's javelin, and Audrey Hughes won the discus with a final mark of 44.76m to give the women throwers a sweep on the afternoon.

COUGAR NOTABLES:
- Washington State's women's javelin throwers moved up two spots into No. 15 in this week's USTFCCCA event group rankings. 
- The Cougars' women hammer throwers stayed at No. 20 in this week's division I event group rankings.
- Coming off of an idle week,  Washington State's men's 100m group dropped to No. 33 in this week's event group rankings.
- The WSU women's 4X100m team owns the No.  36 time (44.70) in the nation. Elise Unruh-Thomas, the team's leader individually in the 100m dash, ran a personal-best 11.57 at the Texas Relays, a time that ranks 78th in the NCAA and third all-time at WSU.
- Freshman Louie Hinchliffe has the third-fastest 100m time (10.23) in the Pac-12 while teammate, and fellow first-year sprinter, Mason Lawyer, ranks ninth in the conference after a 10.42 at the Texas Relays.
- Jared McAlvey was named the Pac-12 Men's Track Athlete of the Week back on Mar. 21 after clocking a 50.90 in the 400m hurdles which still stands as the second-fastest in the Pac-12 this season.

UP NEXT:
The Cougars are into their final fortnight of pre-championship meets as they get set to head to the Wildcat Invitational (Apr. 23) in Ellensburg, Wash., followed by the Fresno State Invitational (Apr. 28-29) to conclude April's competition schedule.  The Cougars will turn the page to championship season in May beginning with the 2023 Pac-12 Championships back at Mt San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.
