Cougars Close Out Weekend Sweep with 6-0 Shutout Win

PULLMAN, Wash. (March 5, 2023) – Washington State finished off a home-opening series sweep with a 6-0 win over Southern Indiana at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars improved to 10-1 for their best start since the 1980 team started 18-0. Elijah Hainline collected two hits including a 451-foot two-run home run over the scoreboard, Sam Brown homered for the third straight game and starter Grant Taylor struck out seven in 5.1 scoreless innings.

WSU scored in the first two innings, added the Hainline two-run shot in the fourth, Brown's home run in the fifth and a Cam Magee two-out RBI-single in the seventh. Four Cougar pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts and held Southern Indiana (5-6) to four hits to post WSU's second shutout win of the season.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first, Jonah Advincula doubled off the right wall on the first pitch he saw and later scored on Brown's sacrifice fly to left field. WSU made 2-0 in the second after Hainline's two-out RBI-single to left field that scored Magee from second who had worked a walk earlier in the inning.

In the fourth, Hainline made 4-0 with a 451-foot two-run blast over the scoreboard in left-center. Brown followed with an opposite-field solo homer down the left field line an inning late for a 5-0 Cougar advantage.

Taylor had settled in and posted five scoreless frames and gave way to the bullpen after allowing a one-out walk. Reliever Andrew Baughn ended the threat with a flyout and strikeout to preserve the 5-0 lead.

In the seventh, Magee made it 6-0 after capping a nine-pitch at-bate with an opposite-field two-out RBI-single through the left side. Shane Spencer worked a scoreless eighth and Ryan Orr closed things out with a perfect ninth.
