CORVALLIS, Ore. (March 12, 2023) – Four Washington State pitchers combined to one-hit No. 15 Oregon State in a 3-1 victory at Goss Field Sunday afternoon, clinching WSU's first series win in Corvallis since 2009.
Â
Washington State (13-2, 2-1 Pac-12) scored two first-inning runs and added another in the ninth as starter
Grant Taylor, relievers
Connor Wilford,
Andrew Baughn and
Chase Grillo combined to hold OSU (11-4, 1-2 Pac-12) to just one hit.
Sam Brown collected two hits as
Jacob Morrow and
Bryce Matthews recorded RBI. Wilford picked up the win with three no-hit innings, retiring all nine hitters he faced including three strikeouts. Baughn worked a scoreless eighth and Grillo worked a scoreless ninth.
WSU claimed its Pac-12 opening series for the first time since taking two of three at Arizona in 2014.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first, WSU pushed two runs across with two outs as
Jacob Morrow lined an RBI-single the other way into right field and
Bryce Matthews followed with an RBI-single back up the middle for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Taylor ran into some trouble in the third inning as a single, walk and wild pitch were followed by a run-scoring sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. OSU loaded the bases later in the inning but Taylor ended the threat with a ground ball to
Cam Magee at third base who stepped on the bag for the third out.
Â
OSU threatened in the fifth inning after Taylor issued a leadoff walk but reliever
Connor Wilford entered from the bullpen and retired all three hitters he faced to preserve the 2-1 lead. Wilford was at it again in the seventh, retiring all three hitters and ended the frame with a strikeout.
Â
Andrew Baughn retired the side in order in the eighth before the Cougars added a big insurance run in the ninth. Hainline led off the inning with a double into the right-centerfield gap, moved to third on a
Greg Fuchs groundout and scored on a OSU wild pitch for a 3-1 lead.
Â
In the bottom of the ninth, the OSU leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch and WSU called upon Grillo. Following a flyout, Grillo issued a walk but followed with a popup and ended the game with a flyout to Oregon State transfer
Greg Fuchs in left field.
