Cougars open indoor season Saturday at The Podium

Washington State will compete in five indoor meets at the Spokane indoor venue this winter.

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State will officially open the 2023-24 indoor track and field season on Saturday as it competes in the 2023 Spokane Invitational from The Podium.  The men's high jump, women's weight throw, and women's long jump are each scheduled to begin at noon, while the track events are set to begin at 1 p.m. with men's and women's 5,000m.

2022-23 Season Preview:

- The Cougar women will return a pair of sprinters who rank in the top-10 all-time in the 60-meter dash— Skyler Walton (7.40, third all-time) and Maribel Caicedo (7.44) each cracked the top-five last season.
- Caicedo set a WSU school record last season in the 60-meter hurdles (7.99).
- Jasneet Nijjar (54.17, fourth all-time) and Elena Willems (55.66, eighth all-time) each begin the indoor season in the top-10 all-time in the indoor 400m.
- The Cougs have three student-athletes ranked in the top-10 in the indoor 200-meter dash heading into the season — Jasneet Nijjar (24.21), Elise Unruh-Thomas (24.22), and Maribel Caicedo (24.27).
- Alaina Stone Boggs moved up to second all-time at WSU in the 3,000-meter (9:21.29), while Cristina Molteni (9:26.56) reached fourth all-time in her first year wearing crimson last season.
- Washington State will return its entire DMR team (Neema Kimtai, Jasneet Nijjar, Elena Willems, and Alaina Stone Boggs) that set a WSU program record in Seattle, Wash., last season.
- The Cougs have a pair of men in the top-10 of the indoor 400m going into the season. Jared McAlvey reached seventh all-time at 47.67 in Spokane, Wash., last season, while Ethan Willems hit a 47.75 to move up to eighth all-time in Albuquerque, N.M.
- Lee Walburn reached fourth all-time in the heptathlon with 5,298 points in Seattle last winter.

Washington State student-athletes will continue training through a one-month break in competition as it looks ahead to a split weekend between The Podium in Spokane and the Dempsey Indoor facility in Seattle. The Spokane Sports Showcase is the Cougs' next meet on Friday, Jan. 12, followed by the UW Preview on Sat., Jan. 13.
