PULLMAN, Wash. — No. 4 Washington State (15-1, 5-0 Pac-12) tallied eight aces as a team at the service line and won 39-of-52 (75 percent) sideout points in a 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-20) win over Cal (12-4, 1-4 Pac-12) Friday night in Bohler Gym.
Magda Jehlárová matched her career-high with four aces as she and
Katy Ryan tied for the team lead with 10 kills on the night.
Jasmine Martin continued her return to form with four kills and a pair of blocks while
Argentina Ung posted another 34 aces to go along with five kills on only six swings with zero errors (.833 att pct).
"I think we have a lot more depth this year," said middle blocker
Jasmine Martin. "I feel like last year, we had all of the pieces, but with me and [middle blocker] Shea (Rubright) going down in the middle, we lacked depth in certain areas. Us having depth as a whole team has really made us stronger on both sides of the net," said Martin.
Karly Basham and
Julia Norville combined for another 25 digs over three short sets in which Cal only led briefly during the opening set. The Cougars dominated the opening set, winning 10-of-11 (90 percent) sideout points while hitting .545 (14-2-22) as a team in the first.
Washington State went on to lead wire-to-wire in the second set, followed by a third set in which it went on to hit .481 (16-3-27) with another three aces to close out the sweep in a match lasted just 1 hour and 17 minutes from first serve to match point.
"I was impressed with the way our girls came out from the beginning, which we did at Oregon as well," said Head Coach
Jen Greeny.
With the win, the Cougars have no won 14-consecutive matches, the longest winning streak under Head Coach
Jen Greeny and the longest such streak since her playing days and a program record 16-match winning streak in 1997.
"It has really been how we approach every day practice. Even after these wins, there has always been plenty that we can look at and get better at each day," said Greeny.
