PULLMAN, Wash. —No. 4 Washington State volleyball (15-2, 5-1 Pac-12) fell in a close four sets, 3-1 (31-29, 29-27, 23-25, 25-18), at the hands of third-ranked Stanford (13-2, 6-0 Pac-12) Sunday in Bohler Gym. Another rowdy crowd on hand in Bohler forced the Cardinal into a season-high 19 serving errors, but WSU was edged out in extra points in each of the the opening two sets before falling, 25-18, in a decisive fourth set.
Argentina Ung fell just one dig shy of her career high with 17 to lead the Cougars on Sunday. She also added four kills and 42 assists on the afternoon, while
Iman Isanovic finished strong to end the match with a team-high 14 kills.
Katy Ryan was virtually unstoppable early and also finished tied for the team-high with 14 kills at a .391 clip (14-5-23) from her opposite position.
Magda Jehlárová contributed on six of the Cougs' seven total blocks in the match, but it was Washington State that struggled to get past the Stanford block as the Cardinal racked up 14 total blocks as a team, tied for the second most of any WSU opponent so far this season.
Washington State led late in the opening set and let a pair of set points slip away. The first came at 25-24 off of a kill from Isanovic, with the second following at 27-26 off of a Stanford service error. WSU saved one set point of its own before Stanford finished off the opening frame behind kills from McKenna Vicini and Caitie Baird.
Katy Ryan helped save the first Stanford set point of the second with a kill to bring the set even at 24-24.
Pia Timmer set up the Cougs with a set point after a kill on the ensuing point for 25-24, but Stanford would sideout and eventually took the two-set lead on their third set point opportunity of the third to win again on extra points, 29-27.
As they had in the second, the Cougars jumped out to a quick lead in the third set behind a 4-1 out of the intermission. The Cougars held onto their lead into the late moments of the third set and won a crucial point for 20-18 behind a kill from
Iman Isanovic. Isanovic's kill, assisted by
Karly Basham after a strong defensive play that saw the ball bounce around the rafters, halted a 3-0 Stanford run that had the Cardinal within a point at 19-18. Washington State hit .316 as a team in the third set as it pulled back within striking distance after 25-23 third-set win.
Stanford's offense proved too potent for WSU in the fourth as the Cardinal tallied three different players with five or more kills, including nine from Kendall Kipp, in the decisive fourth set.
The loss snapped a 14-match winning streak for the Cougars, their longest such streak since winning 16-consecutive matches to open the 1997 season.
