PULLMAN, Wash. — No. 4 Washington State (17-2, 7-1 Pac-12) held Colorado (10-9, 2-6 Pac-12) to just .111 (28-18-90) hitting with 10 blocks as a team in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-17) win Sunday afternoon in Bohler Gym.
Pia Timmer led all players for a second-straight match with 17 kills, while the back row tandem of
Karly Basham and
Julia Norville had another perfect night receiving and a combined 20 digs.
Just halfway through the month of October, the Cougars are just one win shy of their season total from last year after improving to 10-1 at home this season after Sunday's win. Colorado led for only a single point — a WSU attack error gave it a 4-3 lead early in the second — over the course of the entire match as Washington State's defense limited Colorado a match-low .094 attacking in the opening set, and only eight kills on 27 attempts in the second (.111).
WSU followed up with its most efficient set of the match in the third, tallying 15 kills as a team with only three errors (15-3-38, .316). The Cougars had their fastest start of the match in the third frame, opening up a 7-3 lead to force an early Buffs' timeout. Colorado went on a run to get within a point at 8-7, but a 4-0 WSU run behind the serving of
Iman Isanovic pushed the Cougars' lead back out to 13-9.
Magda Jehlárová and
Lana Radakovic tied for the team lead with five total blocks apiece, while
Katy Ryan added four block assists on the afternoon.
Argentina Ung dished out another 31 assists on the day while adding another three kills without any errors offensively for the Cougs. Washington State later went on 6-0 run with Timmer serving to lead by as many as eight at 23-15. The fifth-year from Emlichheim, Germany closed out the match two points later from the service line with her lone ace of the afternoon to give Washington State a 25-17 third-set win.
Washington State improved to 4-1 in the month of October after tallying its seventh sweep in Bohler Gym already this season.
