ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Washington State women's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 2-1 loss at No. 9/17 Michigan, Thursday evening at U-M Soccer Stadium. A pair of first-half goals from Michigan put the Wolverines ahead at the break, 2-0, before WSU junior Margie Detrizio pulled one back for the Cougars in the 56^th minute. Despite outshooting UM, 13-0, in the second period, WSU was not able to complete the comeback, falling 2-1.

Early in the contest, Michigan played direct at WSU's backline, slotting home the opening goal in the 11^th minute courtesy of Sammi Woods. The Cougs settled into the half, looking to equalize, but another direct ball against the run of play gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead in the 21^st minute.

After the intermission, the Cougs dominated play with eight shots on goal. Detrizio led Wazzu with seven shots, including her eighth career goal 10 minutes into the half. The junior forward received a throw-in from sophomore Reese Tappan, took a deft touch to split two defenders on the turn, before finishing with the outside of her right foot.

WSU dominated the stat line, outshooting Michigan 17-5, including 9-4 shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Nadia Cooper made two first-half saves and was not called into action in the second half. WSU's midfield and backline held the Wolverines without a shot in the second period, and limited UM to a single corner kick.

The Cougar soccer program returns to Pullman to welcome Portland for their home opener, Thursday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. at Lower Soccer Field.
