Reese Tappan, a sophomore defender on the Washington State University soccer team, family is everything.
Tappan FaceTimes her parents every day and they are her biggest motivation.
"They came to all my home games and my dad came to all my away games. It was nice to be able to see and talk to them and it kept me motivated," Tappan said.
This dedication means everything to Tappan.
"My dad has helped and pushed and influenced me to be who I am. I would not be here without his help," Tappan said.
Tappan's parents are graduates of the University of Washington in Seattle. Her cousin plays for the Huskies' men's soccer team. Although her parents are Husky graduates, they have embraced the Cougar spirit and proudly support both schools.
Tappan's mom, Lori Tappan, got her involved in sports at 4 years old. Lori wanted to coach a recreational team, so Reese joined the team.
Tappan played soccer and basketball and competed in track growing up in New Castle, Washington, outside Seattle. In the sixth grade Tappan competed in a tournament in Sweden.That's when she knew she had a special talent.
"Throughout middle school I had a major development and I noticed I was more ahead than others," Tappan said.
Tappan said she loves trying new things and Pullman offered an opportunity to live in a new environment.Moving across the state to play for the Cougars was an easy choice for Tappan.
"Everyone knows each other and everyone is so friendly. The atmosphere and community family aspect in Pullman is unique," Tappan said.
Along with her family, she said fellow Cougs have motivated her.
"A good amount of fans show up to our games and the atmosphere is always great," she said. "Seeing all the Cougs coming to support us gives me the energy and drive to win and make everyone happy," Tappan said.
Through her teammates, coaches and fans, Tappan has created a second family in Pullman where she is studying pre-med nursing.
Being honest, helpful, responsible and coachable are important to her. Tappan said she wants her legacy to be shown through her hard work and grit, her leaving it all out on the field.
"I want to live day by day, giving 110% effort and making the ones around me proud and happy, as well as myself," Tappan said.
