Cougs cruise past Beavers in Sunday sweep at Bohler Gym

Washington State is a perfect 5-0 at home this season and has now won 22 straight matches over unranked teams going back to last season.

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Laura Jansen hit .450 (10-1-20) with only a single attack error and right side Katy Ryan added another 10 kills on only 23 swings as Washington State volleyball (12-5, 4-2 Pac-12) swept Oregon State (6-10, 1-5 Pac-12), 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19), on Sunday afternoon in Bohler Gym.  Pia Timmer tallied a match-high 11 kills and the Cougs are now a perfect 11-0 this season against unranked teams as they defended home court for a fifth-straight win in Bohler to open up the 2022 home schedule.

After the 2-0 home weekend, WSU is now 16-3 against Pac-12 northwest schools (Oregon, Oregon State and Washington) since 2019.  Washington State also notched its seventh sweep of the season and its eighth-consecutive win in the all-time series against Oregon State with the 3-0 win.

The Cougs reached double digit aces for the fourth time this season with 10 aces a team from the service line on Sunday.  Magda Jehlarova, Weronika Wojdyla and Argentina Ung each had three total blocks on the afternoon while libero Karly Basham (7) and Julia Norville (5) combined for double-digit digs in a quiet afternoon for them on the back row.

As she has throughout the early Pac-12 season, Basham helped keep the Cougars' offense moving out of system and racked up six assists on the afternoon.  Ung also continued to have an impact around the court, adding three kills on five attempts and seven digs to go along with her 27 assists in the match.

Washington State dominated play in the opening set and took a 7-2 run to start the match before finishing off the opening set with a 7-1 run that included the final four points to win the set, 25-14.  Oregon State suffered a match-high eight attack errors in the second but led late, 19-16.

Cougars' Head Coach Jen Greeny called a timeout after three-straight OSU kills gave WSU its largest deficit of the match down, 19-16.  Her team then responded to the timeout messages in the form of a 7-0 run to steal momentum back, earning a late 23-19 WSU lead in the process.  Oregon State sided out to make it 23-20 but Pia Timmer later gave the Cougs a sideout and closed out the set with her second ace of the match.

Washington State improved to 8-0 after winning the opening two sets as they grabbed four aces as a team and hit .321 (13-4-28) collectively in the third set to win, 25-19.

The Cougars have won four of their last five and will look to carry that momentum back on the road as it prepares to take on Colorado on the road next Friday beginning at 4 p.m. (PST).   Washington State will then head across the Rockies to play Utah next Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. (PST).  Both matches will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Mountain.
