In Case You Missed It
SEATTLE – Playing for the first time in nearly three weeks, the Cougars (4-1-1) left the Westside with heartbreak as No. 23 Washington (6-1-2) took home the first half of the Boeing Apple Cup Series with a 2-1 win at Seattle Friday night. For nearly 90 minutes the Cougars fought an uphill battle back into the contest only to see the game literally slip through their hands on a rainy wet night at Husky Soccer Stadium when the Huskies scored with just :18 seconds to go in regulation to grab the victory. The shot by Washington's Karlee Stueckle took advantage of the wet ground to squirt through the hands of senior Marissa Zucchetto who was in position to make the save.
Prior to the tough luck goal that ended the match, the Cougs found themselves chasing the Huskies for most of the contest as Washington got on the board in just the 7' after converting a turnover in the midfield into the game's first goal. While the early strike snapped the Cougs' shutout streak, WSU continued to battle despite struggling to connect in the final third. Finally, in the 73' minute, lighting would strike for the Cougs thanks to the individual brilliance of senior Makamae Gomera-Stevens. After a momentum changing tackle by senior Elyse Bennett gave the possession to the Cougs, Gomera-Stevens did the rest of the work as she took the loose ball nearly 70 yards down the left side of the pitch to get into scoring position. After faking a touch to the inside she floated long ball from outside the left edge of the 18 over the top of the Washington keeper and into the side netting for the equalizer. The Cougs would continue to put pressure on the Huskies for the final 15 minutes but a second goal or overtime was not to be on the road.

Things You Need To Know

Washington State fell for the first time on the year falling to 4-1-1 overall. The game counted as a non-conference contest between the two teams.
UW won for the second-straight time in the rivalry series (both at Seattle and by one goal) as the Cougs fall to 14-9-7 all-time against UW and 5-7-3 at Seattle.
- 1st time the Cougs have lost back-to-back matchups against UW since dropping four-straight from 1994-97
The two goals given up to UW was the most relinquished by WSU in the rivalry series since Oct. 29, 2004 in a 3-2 Coug win at Pullman.
Makamae Gomera-Stevens scored for the second-time on the year, first time since Feb. 12 against Eastern Washington. It was her 11th career goal.
The Cougs shutout streak ended at 383:02 minutes, the longest streak since 2014 (427 min.).
The Cougars get back into Pac-12 play Friday, March 27 at 12 p.m. PT on the road at Colorado.
