Dominate serving and a powerful offensive attack leads WSU to a 3-0 victory.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Volleyball swept away the Golden Bears of California Sunday afternoon inside Bohler Gym with a 3-0 victory.

Set scores from the match were: 25-16, 25-13, and 25-21 in favor of No. 17 WSU (8-2, 8-2 Pac-12).

Washington State picked up where they left off Friday against the Golden Bears of Cal (1-11, 1-11 Pac-12), jumping out to a 7-0 lead to begin the contest. The Cougs saw point production in just about every way during this opening run, with multiple kills from Madga Jehlářová, back-to-back service aces from Hannah Pukis, and the combined blocking effort of Julianna Dalton and Jehlářová. WSU only continued to dominate from there, posting a 4-0 scoring run built on multiple Cal errors and a block from Pia Timmer and Jehlářová. The Cougs finished off the Bears after kills from Kalyah Williams and Timmer, and Golden Bear error for the set win at 25-16.

Set number two brought more of the same dominance, producing a 5-0 scoring run as back-to-back service aces from Penny Tusa ignited the WSU scoring. Another run of 5-0 from Washington State as Julia Norville fueled the Cougars with two service aces, along with kills from Williams and Pukis. WSU took a commanding 20-9 lead over Cal after yet another run from the home squad as Charity Bradley posted one kill, one solo block and she and Magda added another block to continue to control the momentum. The Cougs finished off set two with a service ace from Weronika Wojdyla at 25-13, the first career ace for the redshirt freshman.

The Cougars continued to ride their momentum into set number three with a 4-0 scoring run, anchored by a Jehlářová kill, and a Tusa ace. WSU continued to hold a lead over the Golden Bears midway through the set, as a Timmer kills put the score at 16-13. Cal managed to tie up the set at 20-20, but the Cougars took full control of the match with a 5-1 scoring run to finish the match at 25-21. Magda provided multiple kills during this last run, along with another ace from Tusa and a final kill by Timmer.

STATS OF THE MATCH
The Cougars finished the day with 13 total services aces as a team against Cal. This mark is tied for fifth best all-time in a single match by a WSU Volleyball squad, with the all-time best sitting at 15 total aces.

Madga Jehlářová posted an impressive stat sheet during this Pac-12 match, as she hit .867 overall with 13 kills on 15 attacks. Magda's hitting percentage ranks third-best all-time in WSU history for a single match as well.

Penny Tusa recorded four total service aces against the Golden Bears, pushing her all-time career total to 102 aces. Tusa now ranks eighth all-time in Washington State Volleyball history in the stat category as well.

MATCH NOTES

Hannah Pukis recorded a match-high 26 assists in this contest, along with adding nine digs, one block, and two aces to her stat line.
Washington State saw multiple Cougars making their collegiate debut this afternoon, as Weronika Wojdyla, Castan Sturm, and Jenna Howard all saw action today. Logann Golden made her debut as well for the Cougs Friday.
- Wojdyla posted her first career kill and ace in the match, and Sturm recorded an ace in her first career service attempt as well.
WSU Volleyball returns to action next, Friday, March 5 as the Cougars will head to Los Angeles and take on the Trojans of USC. First serve is scheduled currently for 7 p.m. PT.
