OPENING FIVE
> The Cougs return home for the final time in 2019-20 for two beginning with Cal Wednesday night. WSU is 12-3 at home on the year. Last time against the Bears the Cougs comeback efforts fell short in the final minutes as Cal took their second-straight win in Berkeley.
> WSU dropped a pair of road games in LA over the weekend as they remain winless away from Pullman in Pac-12 play. The Cougs fell in OT at UCLA before a cold shooting night cost them at USC.
> The 1,000 pt watch is officially on for
CJ Elleby who is now 42 points shy of the milestone. He is on pace to become the 3rd fastest in program history to hit 1K.
>
Noah Williams has been finding his rhythm offensively as of late scoring in double-figures in two of the last three games and four times in Pac-12 play.
> After battling injuries all season the Cougs are starting to get healthy, sort of, with the returns of
Marvin Cannon and
Tony Miller. The duo missed over a month of contests but both returned to action seeing limited minutes as they work back into the rotation. However, the Cougs starting point guard,
Isaac Bonton, is now day-to-day.
GAME INFORMATION - vs CAL
WSU returns home for the final time on the year to take on Cal and Stanford at Beasley Coliseum. The Cougs look for some redemption against the Bears Wednesday night after letting a road win slip through their fingers in Berkeley in January as a late comeback fell short thanks to a banked in three by Matt Bradley with 17.6 seconds to play. In the loss the Cougs were led by the Seattle connection as
CJ Elleby scored 22 while
Noah Williams added 16.
Cal has lost its last four contests including a pair at home to Arizona and Arizona State last week. Matt Bradley enters the week the only Bear averaging double-figures at 17.8 ppg to go with 5.1 rpg.
LAST TIME OUT
USC 70 - WSU 50 | Feb. 15, 2020 | Los Angeles
The Cougs could not find any offensive rhythm on the night shooting just 28.6% against the Trojans, their second sub 30% shooting night against USC on the year. The primary culprit was a 4-for-28 effort from deep that saw WSU miss 22-straight from distance at one point. The lone bright spot in the loss was
CJ Elleby who scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his 5th double-double of the year.
WILLIAMS THE X-FACTOR
Having taken over a starting role midway through the season, freshman
Noah Williams has proven an x-factor for the Cougars with his defensive play and rebounding prowess. With his minutes picking up so too has his success on the court and the Cougs success in the win column with Williams in the starting lineup.Â
He has gone for double-figures in six games including four times in Pac-21 play.
He was the catalyst to a 17-5 run against Ark.-Pine Bluff which turned the game around for WSU in the second half and was the defensive stopper for WSU late against UCLA as the Cougs turned an 11-point deficit into an 8-point win in overtime over the Bruins. He notched a 16 points at Cal and a career-best 17 versus Oregon State.
Williams picked up his first career start in the Cougs win over #8 Oregon and led the team at +15. He would go +14 in a start against OSU. He was a team-best +7 against Arizona State. He added an impressive 10 points and 6 rebounds in WSU's win over Washington.
More traditionally, Williams is averaging 6.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 1.8 apg in 21.2 mpg.
As a starter, Williams is averaging 8.5 ppg on 37.9% shooting, 4.4 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.5 spg in 28.9 mpg.
