INDIANAPOLIS – A pair of Washington State University athletics employees from the Department of Student-Athlete Development and Wellbeing have been accepted into the NCAA Leadership Academy Workshop (LAW). Shelby McKay, Assistant Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Development and Wellbeing, and Derrick Mitchell, Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development and Wellbeing, have both been accepted into the eight-month leadership program, which starts on Oct. 19.
LAW empowers athletics administrators with the knowledge and plan to build a sustainable leadership development program. The NCAA Leadership Academic Workshop utilizes best practices, and lessons learned, so participants can tailor their leadership development program to their unique campus needs.
"The Washington State University Student-Athlete Development department is honored to have been selected to participate in the 2020-2021 NCAA Leadership Academy Workshop," said Mitchell. "We look forward to learning and growing in this space as leaders. (LAW) will provide the steps for us to discover what exactly our student-athletes need and which approaches will impact them the most. We plan to take the knowledge and resources acquired in the NCAA Leadership Academy to implement an effective leadership program at WSU and help us in our goal of developing strong student-athlete leaders."
The Leadership Academy Workshop is an eight-month commitment and will consist of three learning modules. These learning modules will each be comprised of four weeks of focused engagement on a critical area of leadership program development. Participants will meet once weekly during each module.
LAW will utilize face-to-face virtual trainings, via the Zoom platform, to continue providing needle-moving education. The virtual program will incorporate active learning strategies and high-level participant engagement to replicate the in-person LAW programming experience. LAW virtual sessions will utilize Zoom features including polling, breakout groups and the chat box to maintain the interactive dynamic necessary to foster a transformative impact. The sessions will also include slide deck visuals and audio and video clips to manage the pace and energy of 'the room'.
