MATCH PREVIEW
>> The Cougars begin the North Portland Marriott Invite with a match against Utah State Friday morning. WSU holds a 4-2 overall advantage over the Aggies, with Washington State winning the last meeting in 2007, 3-0.Â
>> The second contest of the tournament will be against host, Portland, who the Cougars are fairly familiar with, holding an 8-1 series lead over the Pilots.Â
>> WSU will conclude the North Portland Marriott Invite versus neighbor Idaho, in which the Cougars are 43-21 against the Vandals all-time. The last meeting between these two programs was 2016, with Washington State winning 3-0.Â
NATIONAL RANKINGS
Washington State check in at No. 26 overall in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) after the first week of play, just missing the Top 25 by eight points. San Diego ranks just ahead of the Cougars at No. 25 with 81 points, while WSU totals 73 overall. The RichKern Poll sees WSU at No. 28 overall through one week of play, and the Pablo Rankings saw the Cougars at No. 14 overall in the country once preseason rankings were released.Â
FRESHMEN TAKEOVER
The Cougars saw plenty of production from multiple newcomers during the opening three matches at James Madison to start off the season. Freshman
Pia Timmer currently leads WSU in kills (27), points (32.5), kills per set (3.00), and attacks (79).
Reagan Cooper, and
Magda Jehlarova each currently sit in second on the team in kills with 21 each, and
Alexcis Lusby added 12 kills during the three matches as well. Magda also leads WSU currently in total blocks at 10.0, and blocks per set at 1.11.Â
SENIOR CLASS CONTINUES TO LEAD
Washington State volleyball seniors,
Jocelyn Urias,
Alexis Dirige, and
Ashley Brown picked up where they left off last season statistically providing solid leadership in the Cougars' two victories last weekend. Urias totaled 21 kills during three matches at JMU, along with adding 2.0 blocks to her stat line. Dirige led WSU in digs during all three contests, totaling 52 overall, and stands currently at 5.78 digs per set. Brown paced the flow of the offensive attack, generating 70 assists over the three matches, along with averaging 10.00 assists per set as well.Â
