WEEK PREVIEW
>> Pac-12 action will get underway this week, starting off, hosting a rivalry match against No. 8 Washington inside Bohler Gym, Wednesday, Sept. 25. WSU split the Boeing Apple Cup Series with the Huskies in 2018, with both matches being played to five sets. While the Cougars fell to UW on the road, Washington State knocked off No. 19 Washington inside Bohler Gym to clinch not only a fourth place overall finish in the Pac-12, but also earned the opportunity to host the opening two rounds of the 2018 NCAA Tournament as well.
>> The second contest for the Cougars this week will features a trip to Berkeley, Calif. to take on the No. 21 ranked Golden Bears of California. WSU will be looking for revenge in 2019, after falling twice to Cal at 3-1 both at home and on the road last season.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
Washington State saw an increase in the amount of received votes for the week four American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) with 74 points, for a No. 28 overall ranking. The RichKern Poll sees Washington State drop one spot to No. 29 this week, and the Pablo Rankings have the Cougars remaining in the top 10 at No. 10 overall heading into Pac-12 competition.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
WSU came away with a 3-0 overall weekend against the competition at the UTRGV Tournament this past weekend, and saw three named to the all-tournament team by the event's conclusion. Freshman
Alexcis Lusby was named Tournament MVP after totaling 33 kills in three matches, along with a hitting percentage of .448, and 10 overall blocks.
Magda Jehlarova and
Alexis Dirige each were named to the UTRGV All-Tournament team as well, both putting up great numbers to aid the Cougars in the weekend sweep. Magda posted 15 blocks over three matches, and totaled 19 kills and a hitting percentage of .351. Dirige anchored the defensive ground game with 42 overall digs, a reception percentage of .960, and added six service aces to her weekend stat sheet as well.
LAST TIME OUT
The Cougars are coming off a 3-0 trip to Edinburg, Texas at the UTRGV Tournament. WSU swept both Houston Baptist and Texas Southern, and downed tournament host Texas-Rio Grande Valley in a four set victory. Heading into Pac-12 play, the Cougars are currently 11-1 overall, having only dropped five total sets in those 12 matches. WSU sees the current winning streak at 10 overall as well, having only fallen to Big Ten adversary Iowa in the second match of the year in a neutral site contest.
