In Case You Missed It
HONOLULU – With an impenetrable defense and a swarming offense the No. 24 ranked Washington State soccer team (6-1-0) overwhelmed the host Rainbow Wahine of Hawai'i (2-5-1), 1-0, Thursday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium in Honolulu. After settling into a rhythm midway through the opening half the Cougars finally broke through for what would be the lone goal of the game in the 41'. As they have done all season the Cougars took advantage of their size and athleticism in the air to get on the board when
Shayna Whieldon out-jumped the Wahine defenders to head home a free kick from
Brianna Alger. The goal seemed to be the first of many for the Cougars, however, WSU was denied any insurance strikes the rest of the way as Hawai'i's Alexis Mata came up with 10 saves on 18 shots, two shy of her career high. The Cougars' also had a bit of bad luck in the second half when a goal off the head of
Hanna Goff was taken off the board when the junior was flagged for being a step offsides on a Cougar corner.
While the offense pelted the Wahine defense for 90 minutes the WSU defense smothered Hawai'i on the other end, giving up just three shots throughout the night. While
Ella Dederick was credited with a pair of saves in the game it was a pair of non-save chances that proved to be the difference as the sixth-year star came off her line a twice to shutdown potential Wahine scoring chances. In addition to Dederick, the Cougars' defensive back line and holding midfield controlled the game, out-muscling the smaller Wahine attackers throughout the contest to stymie any changes in momentum.
Stat Of The MatchÂ
The first half goal for the Cougars was their 14th of the season. 2/3 of WSU's goals (21 total) have come in the opening 45'.
