PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Volleyball began the 2019 Cougar Challenge on a positive note, sweeping Idaho State in the first home match of the season.
Set scores from the match were: 25-18, 25-19, and 25-13 in favor of the Cougars (6-1).
The opening set saw the Bengals of ISU (3-5) and the Cougars trading points throughout the early stages of the set. Each program managed to hold small leads during various periods, with neither finding any true separation. A quick 3-1 run by WSU, aided by Charity Bradley and Alexcis Lusby kills gave the Cougars a slight 10-8 advantage. The Bengals answered right back with a 4-0 run of their own to reclaim a lead at 12-10 over WSU. Multiple small lead changes and ties ensued until Washington State broke free with a 7-0 run late in the set to take over completely for the win at 25-18. Kills from Hannah Pukis, Magda Jehlarova, and Bradley boosted the offensive attack of the Cougars during the run, and the set was capped off by a Jehlarova and Lusby block as well.
Washington State took quick control of the second set in this nonconference match, with a 3-0 run from a Jocelyn Urias ace, and Bradley kills, that saw the home squad out in front. The Cougars maintained a slim lead for the majority of this contest, ultimately defeating Idaho State in set two after an 8-3 scoring run. The offense was anchored by Urias, Lusby, and Bradley, totaling multiple kills to take down the Bengals.
Set number three was all Washington State, shooting out of the gate with a 6-1 lead, as Pia Timmer generated three kills on her own. The Cougars followed up that run with yet another, this time with five straight points, with a statement made by both Charity and Jocelyn after a tremendous block. Washington State continued to roll in this final set of play, with kills from Mykayla Myers, Reagan Cooper, and Jehlarova that capped off the set at 25-13.
