PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State volleyball continued to roll through the 2019 Cougar Challenge with a 3-0 victory over UT-Arlington Friday night.
Set scores from the match were: 25-20, 25-13, and 25-14 in favor of the Cougars (7-1).
A quick lead over the Mavericks of UT-Arlington (5-3) for Washington State to begin this match, was fueled by kills from
Pia Timmer, and a service ace from
Julia Norville. The WSU offense kept grinding as
Charity Bradley and
Magda Jehlarova added big swings to see the Cougars out in front early. UTA kept the opening set rather close midway throughout however, but the blocking of Washington State was too much to handle as
Alexcis Lusby, Timmer, and Jehlarova were a force in this contest. Three consecutive points to cap off the set one victory was generated by a Lusby kill, and another ace from Norville for the 25-20 win.
Set number two is when the Cougars truly found their stride in this match as a 5-0 run propelled Washington State into the driver's seat at 11-5. In addition to the dominate blocking of WSU, the offensive attack never missed a step as
Jocelyn Urias and
Gabbie Heller recorded kills and pushed the lead out 23-12. Washington State forced two back-to-back errors from the Mavericks and set number two was in the books at 25-13, in favor of the Cougars.
The momentum was in full swing for the home squad tonight, as an 8-1 run early in the third set helped pave the way for the WSU victory. The Cougars found themselves up big at 15-5, with nearly everyone finding ways to record points during the run. Magda continued to make big plays on both offense and defense, and with the combined scoring from kills by
Reagan Cooper,
Penny Tusa, Bradley, and Lusby, this match was fully in Washington State's control. Set number three was sealed off with back-to-back kills from Tusa, and Lusby for the 25-14 win, and a Cougar sweep inside Bohler Gym.
