Morgan Weaver put her name among the best in the nation as the Washington State star was named to the watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, as announced Thursday. Weaver became the first Cougar in program history to be named to the preseason watch list.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious award in collegiate soccer and is awarded to United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Year in NCAA Division I soccer. The Missouri Athletic Club has been presenting college soccer's player of the year awards since 1986. The Pac-12 placed nine on the list including 2018 winner, Stanford's Catarina Macario.
Weaver finished her 2018 season with first team all-region and All-Pac-12 awards after leading the Cougars offensively. She finished her junior season with a career-best 13 goals, nearly doubling her career total coming into the season. Her 12 goals during the regular season were the second-most among all Pac-12 players before she added a 13th goal in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament against Montana. Weaver ended her season with a career-best 30 points, chipping in four assists to go with her 13 goals, scoring or assisting on 41% of the Cougars' tallies on the year. In all, Weaver's season ranked among the best in program history as her 13 goals tied for fourth all-time while her 30 points were the sixth most in a single season for the Cougars.Â
For her career, Weaver has posted 28 goals and seven assists for a total of 63 points. She enters the year fifth all-time in scoring in Cougar history.
The Cougars begin their 2019 campaign August 16 on the road at San Diego State. The home schedule begins Aug. 30 with a tournament rematch against Montana. The two teams met in Pullman in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament with the Cougars posting a 5-1 rout of the Grizzlies. WSU has advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons while earning a bid in the postseason in eight of the last nine years.
