Late Comeback Falls Short as Cougars Drop 4-3 Contest at Colorado

| By:
BOULDER, Colo. – For the second-straight match Washington State failed to capture the opening doubles point and it proved costly as Colorado took the 1-0 lead and held on for a 4-3 win over the No. 28 Cougars Sunday at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.

With the loss, the Cougars fall to 13-4 on the season, 0-2 in Pac-12 play. Colorado improves to 7-7, 1-1.

In doubles play, Colorado came out strong to capture two wins and clinch the opening point. At No. 3, Tallulah Farrow and Ky Ecton defeated Aneta Miksovska and Jovana Knezevic 6-0 followed by Sarah Nayar and Megan Forster's 6-2 win over Melisa Ates and Tang Lee at No. 2. The No. 2 match between WSU's Tiffany Mylonas and Hikaru Sato against Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Monica Malinen was stopped at 4-4.

Colorado increased its lead to 2-0 when Andrinopoulos defeated Sato 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2 singles. The Cougars found the scoreboard to cut the lead in half as Mylonas needed three sets to defeat Malinen at No. 3, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. At No. 1, Nayar upset Bayerlova, the nation's 38th-ranked player, in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2, giving Colorado a 3-1 advantage.

WSU tied the match at 3-3 as Lee had little trouble with Ecton at No. 6, winning 6-1, 6-2, while Savanna Ly-Nguyen pulled out a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win at No. 4 over Forster. That put the outcome of the match at No. 5 where Farrow held off Ates, 6-4, 6-2, giving Colorado the 4-3 victory.

The Cougars resume their three-match road swing Wednesday at Fresno State. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
