Cougars Have a Strong Start to Spring Season

Washington State finished fourth in its first competition since the mid-season break.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Washington State men's golf team took fourth at the Anteater Invitational Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club at Newport Beach Calif. 

"When you finish fourth and still have some work to do, that's a good sign," head coach Dustin White said. "The guys played pretty solid this week. Lots of positives to take away and build on for the spring." 

The Cougars shot a three-round score of 880 (+16), holding their fourth-place spot from the first day, putting them just one stroke behind third place Santa Clara (+15, 879). Cal State Fullerton (-1, 863) and Grand Canyon (+10, 874), held their first and second place spots respectively. 

Junior Daniel Kolar lead the Cougars, finishing in the top-10 and tying for eighth after shooting a 217 (+1). Next up for Washington State was Senior Grant Cole, who capped off a stellar performance by leading the team in the third round, shooting one under par, giving him a three-round score of 221 (+5) to tie for 14th. Senior AJ Armstrong was close behind, tying for 20th after shooting 223 (+7). Just one stroke behind Armstrong was junior Nicklaus Chiam (+8, 244), who took sole possession of 22nd. Rounding off the pack was Scott Redelsperger (+13, 229) in a tie for 29th. 

Next, Washington State will take a trip to the islands for the John Burns intercollegiate. The three-day tournament will be Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21-23 at Wailua Golf Course at Lihue, Hawaii.
