Brianna Alger were each named to the 2019 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's All-Pacific Region Team as announced Monday. Weaver was named to the first team while Alger was tabbed for the third team. The award marked the third-straight season Weaver was honored among the elite players in the region while Alger took home her first all-region award after switching to her new home among the Cougars' backline. The duo remarkably had a foot in 61% of the Cougars goals on the year scoring or assisting on 27 of 44 goals. The 44 goals ranks tied for 3rd all-time and the most in the last 26 seasons.
As she has done all throughout what will surely go down as a hall-of-fame career at WSU, Weaver led the Cougars' offensive attack in 2019 scoring a career-best 14 goals to go along with five assists. The star attacker scored 11 goals in the regular season before adding three more in the NCAA Tournament while captaining the team to a record 16 wins and its first College Cup appearance in program history. With the ability to go super nova at anytime, Weaver has been on a tear in the last seven games, scoring nine goals including tying a program record with four goals in just 45 minutes of play against Colorado on senior day. Her 14 goals ranks fourth in single-season history and the most scored by a Cougar player in the last 26 years. Her 33 points is tied for the third most in single-season history. For her career, Weaver has netted 42 career goals, second all-time in WSU history behind hall-of-famer Kim Lynass' (1990-93) other-worldly record of 83. With her second-straight selection to the first team, Weaver now moves on to the all-america vote with a chance to become just the second all-america in program history.
Picking up where he predecessor left off, Alger took over a new position at left back for the Cougars and immediately cemented herself as one of the best two-way backs in the country. The third-year Coug wasted no time jumping in with both feet to her new position as she picked up a pair of assists on the first two goals of the season while leading the Cougs to its first of 10 shutouts on the year. She added an assist in each game at home to run her streak to three-straight games, tying the longest streak in program history. For the season, Alger posted 10 total assists (0.43 per game) which ranked fifth in the Pac-12 but first among defenders. She became just the third Cougar all-time to record double-digit assists in a single season. On the defensive side, Alger helped guide the Cougs to 10 shutouts, tied for the fourth most in program history, while the team allowed one goal or fewer in 15 contests. During the year, Alger earned two defensive player of the week awards on the year as well as Third Team All-Pac-12.
Weaver, Alger, and the rest of the Cougs head to San Jose, Calif. to play in the College Cup beginning Friday, Dec. 6 at Avaya Stadium. The Cougs will face No. 1 seed North Carolina at 4 p.m. in the first of two national semifinals.
