>
Brianna Alger became just the 3rd Coug all-time to record double-digit assists after picking up her 10th of the year against Virginia. She is ranked #32 in the country at 0.48 per game.
> WSU is an impressive 9-4 in one-goal in 2019 with 14 of the last 18 having been decided by one goal or fewer. Both NCAA Tournament games have been one-goal games.
HOW SWEET IT IS
The Cougs head back to the Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history, repeating their run from 2017, after defeating No. 1 seed Virginia. WSU has never played its way into the fourth round, a feat they will look to accomplish Sunday against West Virginia.
The Cougs got their crack at Virginia with a 1-0 first round win over Memphis at home in Pullman.
WSU is in the postseason for the eighth time in the last nine seasons and the 10th time in the last 12 years. WSU sports a 6-10-4 record in the NCAA tournament. Last season WSU bowed out at No. 1 seed Georgetown in round two. In 2017, the Cougs pushed their way to the third round for the first time in program history.
LAST TIME OUT
In the biggest win in program history, the Cougs upset No. 1 seed Virginia, 3-2, Friday night to advance to the sweet 16. WSU became the first team in 2019 to score multiple goals against the Cavaliers in regulation, notching two first half goals and a game-winner in the 82' to down the top ranked Cavs.
Averie Collins and
Morgan Weaver scored the opening goals for WSU while freshman
MacKenzie Frimpong-Ellertson scored the late game-winner. Defensively,
Ella Dederick and her defense held tough against the vaunted UVA attack with Dederick coming up with seven saves to earn the win.
The win was the first for WSU over UVA in three tries after the Cavaliers won a pair of games, including an NCAA Tournament matchup, in 2011.
The upset was the second largest by ranking in program history as UVA was ranked #3 heading into the postseason. The largest win came in a 1-0 shutout of #2 UCLA in 2017, the last year the Cougs made a run to the Sweet 16.
