PULLMAN, Wash. – Looking to reload his roster for the 2020 season, Washington State soccer head coach
Todd Shulenberger announced the signings of eight new Cougars to National Letters of Intent Wednesday. Joining WSU's ranks for next season are: Aniah Cutler (Long Beach, Calif.), Margie Detrizio (Chandler, Ariz.), Alyssa Gray (Gig Harbor, Wash.), Lynette Hernaez (Corona, Calif.), Jayla Land (Irvine, Calif.), Makenna McGill (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Haley Weinkauf (Lake Tapps, Wash.), and Marin Whieldon (Upland, Calif.).
"We are very excited to announce our 2020 class here at Washington State," said Shulenberger. "The focus with this class was pretty specific. We want players to help us close the gap in the most competitive soccer conference in the country and continue to climb the national ladder. I feel this class will jump right in and help us with these goals. This is an attack minded class and a goalkeeper who all have had some sort of national attention on their club teams. We feel confident we landed some of the best players from Washington, California, and Arizona. Go Cougs!"
Aniah Cutler | Forward
Adding to the ranks of the Cougars' attackers, Cutler is a two-sport star at Long Beach Poly, excelling both on the volleyball court and the soccer field. Playing for the first time on the pitch for her high school as a junior, Cutler led her team to a 15-3-2 overall record while advancing to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section championships. Using her height and athleticism up top, Cutler paced the Jackrabbits with 38 points scoring 16 goals and adding six assists. For her play, Cutler earned first team all-league honors as well as All-CIF and All-America awards. On the club level, Cutler is a member of Strikers FC in the ECNL leading the team to the 2018 Best of the Best championship. In the classroom, she has been on the honor roll every semester and intends to major in Biomedical Science at WSU.
Margie Detrizio | Forward
Detrizio will graduate from Basha High School in 2020 before joining the Cougs attacking front in 2020. As a sophomore, Detrizio dominated offensively for the Bears scoring 24 goals and posting 10 assists in 20 games while leading Basha to a 16-5-1 record and a spot in the 2018 AIA Girls Soccer State Championships. After finishing the year, Detrizio opted to focus solely on club soccer playing for the Utah Royals FC in the US Soccer Development Academy. Joining the U-18/19 team last year, Detrizio made an immediate impact scoring a team-best 20 goals in 29 games, finishing just outside of the league's top-10. In the midst of her final season, the athletic attacker has notched five goals in the first six contests for her club in 2019.
Alyssa Gray | Forward
Gray is a two sport star at Gig Harbor High School where she will graduate in the spring of 2020. In the midst of her senior season, Gray has tallied an impressive 78 goals and 25 assists while earning three-straight all-league selections coming into 2019. As a junior, Gray led the Tides to an undefeated Class 3A state championship while scoring 36 goals and adding 10 assists. For her play, Gray was named The News Tribune Area Player of the Year as well as co-league MVP. In addition to earning her second-straight first team all-league award, Gray was named first team all-area, all-region, and all-state. As a senior, Gray has led her team back to the state playoffs having posted an impressive 16-1-1 overall record. In 15 games, she has posted 27 goals and added seven assists.
Lynette Hernaez | Goalkeeper
One of the top youth keepers in the country, Hernaez has been a three-year starter in goal at Santiago High School where she will graduate in 2020. Entering her final year, Hernaez established herself at the top of her peer group as she earned first team All-CIF, all-area, and all-league, her second all-league award of her career, for her play between the posts. In 28 games, Hernaez posted 15 shutouts while leading Santiago to a 20-2-6 overall record while continuing the Sharks unbeaten run in league play having pushed the streak to 71 matches. On the club scene, Hernaez plays alongside of fellow Coug signee, Marin Whieldon, with the champion So Cal Blues.
Jayla Land | Midfield
A two-sport star in soccer as well as track and field, Land is three-time all-league honoree on the soccer field at Woodbridge High School where she will graduate in the spring of 2020. On the field, Land has been her team's captain since her sophomore season and will lead her team once again heading into her senior season this winter. On the club level, Land is a member of the Slammers FC in the ECNL. She was named to the U17 Southwest All-Conference Team for her play in 2018-19. In the classroom Land has produced two years with a 4.0 GPA and intends to major in sports medicine at WSU.
Makenna McGill | Forward
McGill will graduate from Huntington Beach High School in the spring of 2020. She played just one year of high school soccer as a freshman before committing full time to club soccer as a member of Pateadores in the Women's Premier Soccer League. Making the jump to the full team last year, McGill showed off her attacking skills as she was named the 2019 Coastal Conference Offensive Player of the Year. This season, she has notched four goals in nine games for her club. In the classroom, McGill intends to major in biochemical engineering at WSU.
Haley Weinkauf | Defender
A defender by trade, Weinkauf will graduate from Sumner High School in Sumner, Wash. In two varsity seasons, Weinkauf has twice been named all-league earning first team honors as a freshman and second team honors last season as a junior. She sat out her sophomore season while playing club soccer for the Reign Academy in the US Soccer Development Academy. Most recently as a senior, Weinkauf has led the Spartans back to the state championships last weekend, their 12-straight berth into the state tournament. In the critical game, Weinkauf led the defense to a 1-0 shutout of Curtis to earn their spot in the championships which began with a 2-1 win over Glacier Peak HS.
Marin Whieldon | Midfielder
The younger sister of current Coug
Shayna Whieldon, Marin will take her spot at WSU after graduating from Upland High School later this school year. Playing for her father, Bo, Whieldon has led the Scots to three-straight Baseline League championships as well as the school's first state championship in 2018 as a sophomore. The star midfielder earned her third-straight all-league award as a junior after posting 19 points from her center mid position. In club play, Whieldon was named the ECNL Player of the Year after leading her So Cal Blues team to a national championship last year. She enters her senior year ranked one of the top-100 recruits in the country. In the classroom, Whieldon has maintained a 4.3 GPA and been named to the principal's honor roll four years.
