STANFORD, Calif. – Taking on the four-time defending Pac-12 champions, #14 Washington State (8-2-0, 1-1-0) suffered a 5-0 loss at the hands of #2 Stanford (9-1-0, 2-0-0) Thursday night in Stanford. Two goals in a matter of :30 seconds broke open the game for the Cardinal as Stanford bracketed the halftime break to turn a one-goal game on its head on a chilly night in Stanford. After missing out on a trio of early opportunities in the opening minutes of the contest, the Cougs fell behind midway through the opening half when the Cardinal turned WSU's aggression against them with a well-timed counter up the middle by Sophie Smith. Despite the run of play going with the Cardinal for much of the half, the Cougs held tough until a foul inside the box with :12 seconds to play doubled the Cardinal advantage. The shock of falling behind just before the break did not dissipate during the 15 minutes away from the field as the Cougs relinquished a third goal just :17 seconds into the new half when Madison Haley knifed through the WSU back line off the initial restart. After stealing a clearance near midfield, the Cardinal tacked on a fourth goal in the 71' when Catarina Macario, who scored earlier from the penalty spot, broke free inside the box and slotted home her nation's best 14^th goal of the year. With the game winding to a close, the Cougs tough night continued when a corner by the Cardinal ricocheted off a Coug defender and into the back of the night for the fifth and final goal of the night with just under 10 minutes to play.

Things You Need To Know

The Cougars dropped just their second game of the season and first in Pac-12 play.
WSU was shutout for the first time on the year and first time since a 1-0 loss at #2 Georgetown last season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The five goals conceded were the most by WSU since a 5-0 loss to #1 Stanford October 15, 2010.
Catarina Macario, the nation's leader in goals, assists, and points had a foot in four of the five goals in the game with two assists and two goals.
Ella Dederick made a season-high nine saves and moved to third all-time on WSU's all-time list with 259 career saves. She faced a career-high 26 shots, 14 on goal, in the contest.
The six shots were a season-low for the Cougs, the previous low was 17 in the first nine games of the year. The six is the lowest since taking five against Georgetown in last year's NCAA Tournament.
The Cougars head to Berkeley to take on No. 20 Cal Sunday, Oct. 6 at Noon on the Pac-12 Network.
