Late Strike Sinks WSU

In Case You Missed It
LOS ANGELES – Two second half goals halted No. 19 Washington State's (10-5-1, 3-4-1) winning streak against No. 18 UCLA (11-4-1, 5-2-0) as the Bruins took a 2-1 win over the Cougars Sunday afternoon in Westwood. For the first time on the year the Cougs could not hold onto a lead as the Bruins erased a one-goal halftime deficit with strikes in the 54' and in the 85'. Early on it looked like the Cougs may be on their way to another upset of the Bruins on the road when MacKenzie Frimpong-Ellertson connected on a volley in the 33' to put WSU out front. The freshman came up with the early goal after a cross by Molly Myers was popped up by the Bruins' defense where Frimpong-Ellertson took it out of the air and slotted it past the near post for her third goal of the season. The Cougs would hold off a late attack by the Bruins in the opening half to keep their lead into the locker room but the bend-but-don't-break defense would finally crack just 10 minutes into the new half. The Bruins used a combination of passes to get behind the WSU backline before finding a streaking Ashley Sanchez for the equalizer. The Bruins would keep the pressure up before knocking in the game-winner after again working their way behind the backline for an open look from Mia Fishel. In boh cases, the Cougs found themselves back tracking to the defensive end after just missing potential scoring opportunities on the offensive end.
Stat of the Match
The Cougars fell for the first time on the year when scoring first. WSU was 9-0 prior.
