LONG BEACH, Calif. – Washington State players posted 11 victories during the first day of play at the 2019 Beach Tennis Fall Tournament, Friday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
 
"It was a great way to start the tournament with everyone contributing," said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart. "At this point in the season we need to play matches and focus on ourselves getting better each day. Today we did that and look forward to another good day tomorrow."
 
In singles action, three Cougars posted straight-set wins in the top flight. Hikaru Sato cruised by Ana Fraile Toboso of Cal State Northridge, 6-2, 6-3, Savanna Ly-Nguyen defeated Emily Soares of Portland, 6-0, 6-4, while Pang Jittakoat, playing her first collegiate event, got past UC Irvine's Halla Alajeely, 6-2, 7-5.
 
In Flight B singles, Yang Lee had little trouble with Hanh Pham of UC Riverside, 6-1, 6-4. In the C Flight, Carla Quadflieg posted a 6-0, 6-4 win over UC Irvine's Dasee Carter while Carlota Casampere of Long Beach State defeated WSU's Maddie Egan, 6-2, 6-1.
 
In doubles action, WSU went a perfect 6-0 on the day. In Flight A, Sato and Jittakoat cruised to a 6-1 victory over Oberg and Okazaki of Portland in the first round then received a walkover in the next round to advance to the semifinals. As an extra match, the duo defeated Rutkowski/Devarakonda of Long Beach State, 6-0. Also in Flight A, Ly-Nguyen and Lee defeated Coetzee and Fraile Toboso of Cal State Northridge in the first round then cruised to a 6-1 win over Tobrand and Kalachova of Cal State Fullerton in the quarterfinals.
 
In Flight B, Egan/Quadflieg posted a 6-0 victory over Pavani/Masoning from UC Irvine to advance to the semifinals.
 
Play continues Saturday at the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
