Cougars Fall at No. 6/7 Stanford

Washington State fell behind early in a 85-64 loss to the Cardinal.

In Case You Missed It ...
STANFORD, Calif. –
A slow start proved to be too much for Washington State (7-11, 2-5) to overcome on the road against No. 6/7 Stanford (16-1, 6-0) as the Cardinal remained perfect in Pac-12 play with an 85-64 win over the Cougars Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion. After scoring the first basket of the game, the Cougs could not get anything to drop as the Cardinal used a pair of double-digit runs in the opening 10 minutes of play to sprint out to a big lead they would never relinquish. Despite picking up their defensive pressure in the second quarter and holding the Stanford offense in check the Cougars could not take advantage and chip into the Cardinal lead as WSU's offensive woes continued into the halftime break with just Chanelle Molina finding openings to attack the defense. The junior point would end the half with 10 points and three assists as WSU trailed by 18. In the second half the two teams traded big quarters as the Cardinal scored 31 in the third to extend their lead to as much as 31 while the Cougars responded with a 20-to-10 fourth quarter to finish the game. For the Cougs, Molina's efforts on the perimeter were not enough as the Cardinal took advantage of their size inside to create open looks at the rim and behind the arc with reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week Alanna Smith ending the day with 34 points and 15 rebounds. Despite the Cougars outrebounding the Cardinal, 38-37, in the end, Stanford held a 38-22 edge in points in the paint while also turning 14 Cougar turnovers into 23 points.

Coach Ethridge Quote of the Game
"You can't come out of blocks not playing or not playing hard, messing up schemes or not guarding in transition and then being a bad execution offensive team. Again, they're a great team and can really hurt you at a lot of positions. It was disappointing how we started both halves, frankly. Then we bookended both of those quarters with some decent execution and effort plays and good people  coming off the bench. I liked our fight in us its just disappointing that we came out in both halves as slow as we did."
