Cougars Notch 10 Top-Three Finishes in Opening Meet

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – Washington State swimming posted ten top-three finishes in its season-opening meet against San Diego State and Nevada in San Diego Friday afternoon.Â
Freshmen Keiana Fountaine, Payton Bokowy, and Emily Barrier and sophomore Chloe Larson notched a first place finish in the 400 free relay. The team worked together to clock in at 3:34.32, more than two-seconds ahead of the second place team from Nevada. The four were also members of the second place 200 free relay team that clocked in at 1:38.09
"We're really looking forward to our next meet tomorrow at San Diego," said first-year head coach Matt Leach. "We had highlights on every relay, with people making changes to techniques that we're working on and we did a great job racing. As a program we did a great job, I'm looking forward to continue and grow. Overall it was a great meet, and we look forward to our meet tomorrow at San Diego."
Fountaine, Barrier, and Larson were members of the 500 free relay team. Alongside teammate Ryan Falk, the team clocked in an impressive 4:33.97. Barrier and Larson were also members of the third place 150 fly relay and 500 free relay teams. Alongside teammate Sophia Balmaceda, the team clocked in at 1:18.79 in the 150 fly relay, just over a second ahead of teammates Hailey Hyde, Luci Brock, and Fountaine.
Senior Jasmine Margetts, sophomore Samantha Howell, Barrier, and Falk notched a second place finish in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:40.29. Margetts also saw a second place finish in the 400 medley relay. With teammates Lauren Burkel, Mackenzie Duarte, and Clothilde Peseux joining her in the lane, the team clocked in a time of 4:06.82. Finishing in third were teammates Balmaceds, Taylor McCoy, Ciera Kelly, and Brock with a time of 4:07.24.
The Cougars continue the season Saturday against San Diego, the meet is set to begin 11 a.m.
