Ieva Adomaviciute Crowned Rowing World Champion

Fellow WSU alum, Lisa Roman, won silver for the second-straight year at the 2018 World Rowing Championships.

PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – Former Washington State rower Ieva Adomaviciute captured gold in the double sculls, while fellow alum, Lisa Roman, won silver in the eight, Sunday at the 2018 World Rowing Championships.

Adomaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania) teamed up with Milda Valciukaite to represent their native-Lithuania in the women's double sculls. The duo placed second in both the opening heat and semifinal before putting it all together to take home the gold medal and become world champions with a time of 6:44.150 in the A Final. Lithuania finished two seconds ahead of second-place New Zealand (6:46.280) and three and a half seconds ahead of the United States (6:47.750) in third. Both countries had defeated Adomaviciute's crew in prior heats at the World Championships.

A native of Langley, B.C., Roman was joined in the Canadian women's eight by fellow Olympians and World Championship returners Rebecca Zimmerman, Christine Roper, Susanne Grainger, Jennifer Martins, and coxswain Kristen Kit, as well as 2018 Under 23 women's eight Gold medalists Sydney Payne, Madison Mailey and Stephanie Grauer. The Canadian eight opened the championships finishing fourth in its opening heat, Sept. 12, having to move on to the Repechage heat. Canada finished third as the top four moved on to the A Final. In the A Final, Roman's crew clocked in just over two seconds behind the United States in first (6:00.970), with a time of 6:03.050 to edge out New Zealand (6:03.860) and capture the silver medal. This marks the second-straight year that Roman has captured silver at the World Championships as a member of the Canadian women's eight.

Adomaviciute competed with the Cougar rowing team for four seasons (2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17), redshirting her senior season (2015-16) to train and compete with the Lithuanian national team. She is a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I All-American and First Team All-Region 5 honoree (2013, 2017), as well as a 2017 Pac-12 All-Conference honoree. In 2013, Adomaviciute was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year. In 2016, she captured gold in the single sculls at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships and in 2017, she finished fourth in the women's double sculls at the World Rowing Championships.

A transfer from University of the Fraser Valley, Roman competed with the Cougar varsity rowing team for three seasons, rowing in the varsity boat all three years (2010-12). She is a two-time all-conference honoree, and in 2012 was named to the CRCA All-West Region First Team and the Pocock All-America Second Team. She was a member of Canada's women's eight at the 2016 Olympic Games. In 2015-16, Roman was named to the Pac-12's All-Century Women's Rowing Team. Roman has been competing with the Canadian National Team since 2014. Prior to that she rowed for Canada's Western Rowing Club at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2011 and in the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in 2011.

She has competed with the Canadian women's eight since 2011, having won gold at the World Rowing Cup III in 2015 and silver at the 2017 World Rowing Championships. She's an Olympian having helped guide the women's eight to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
