Cougar Soccer Rolls in Minnesota

A pair of goals and a clean sheet kept WSU perfect on the year.

In Case You Missed It
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – In a rematch of an epic battle from 2017, the No. 22 ranked Washington State soccer team (3-0-0) proved to be a step ahead of Minnesota (3-1-0) en route to a commanding 2-0 win Sunday afternoon on the road. Showing off their depth and versatility, the Cougars got a pair of first-time goals to run past the Gophers including the game-winner in just the 6'. Sophomore Makamae Gomera-Stevens, who had been on the doorstep of the goal throughout the first two games of the year, got the Cougars on the board just minutes into the contest when she one-times home a centering pass from junior Morgan Weaver. Weaver had fought through a takedown by the Gophers' defense to find Gomera-Stevens open inside the Minnesota six. The goal was the first of the season for the sophomore midfielder and second of her career.
With the defense hounding the Gophers' attack and holding Minnesota quiet for much of the game, the Cougars were primed to add to their lead and cushion their victory. In the 77' the Cougars would get the breathing space they needed when freshman center-back Mykiaa Minniss worked clear on a corner to head home her first career goal. The goal would be the last action of the day for both teams as the defense clamped down to secure their second-straight clean sheet and first road win of the young season. In all, the Cougars allowed just six shots, two on goal, to grab the victory.

Stat of the Game
The Cougars outshot the Gophers 10-6 on the day while controlling possession throughout the 90' of action.

Quote of the Match
"I am very pleased to get a big road win against a very good Minnesota team. I challenged our team to get on the board first and they responded six minutes in. Today we competed in both half's scoring a goal each and closed the game out." - Head Coach Todd Shulenberger
