NEW ORLEANS -- Washington State University men's and women's track and field teams, as well as seven student-athletes, received national recognition for their combination of athletic and academic excellence in 2018 among all NCAA Division I institutions by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Cougar women's track and field team, with a 3.47 cumulative grade point average, was one of eight Pac-12 members, had the second-best GPA in the conference behind Stanford's 3.61, and was one of the 220 DI women's programs to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.
Four WSU women track and field competitors were singled out for individual All-Academic awards:
Greer Alsop (redshirt senior, triple jump, Invercargill, New Zealand) 3.83 GPA, psychology major;
Devon Bortfeld (senior, steeplechase, Sammamish, Wash.) 3.82 GPA, psychology major;
Stephanie Cho, (junior, intermediate hurdles, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) 3.96 GPA, sport science major; and
Atina Kamasi (sophomore, javelin, Novi Sad, Serbia) 3.31 GPA, sport science major.
The Cougar men's team, with a 3.09 cumulative grade point average, was one of five Pac-12 members, had the second-best GPA in the Pac-12 behind Stanford's 3.44, and was one of the 141 DI men's programs to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.
The three WSU men honored were:
Peyton Fredrickson (junior, high jump, Ridgefield, Wash.) 3.41 GPA, sport management major;
Chandler Teigen (junior, 1500m, Anatone, Wash.) 3.91 GPA, biological engineering major; and
Michael Williams (senior, 5000m, Richland, Wash.) 3.28 GPA, music composition major.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All‐Academic Track and Field Team, the student‐athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student‐athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
