Cougars Fall to No. 16 Stanford

OJAI, Calif. – Washington State tennis saw its run at the Pac-12 Tennis Championship come to an end Friday following at 4-0 semifinal defeated to No. 16 Stanford at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. The loss ends the Cougars regular season at 21-7, the most victories in program history. Stanford captured the opening point by winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 1, the nation's second-ranked team of Michaela Gordon and Emily Arbuthnott defeated Barbora Michalkova and Melisa Ates, 6-1, while Stanford's Melissa Lord and Janice Shin clinched the point with a 6-3 victory of Michaela Bayerlova and Aneta Miksovska. The second doubles match was abandoned with WSU's Tiffany Mylonas and Guzal Yusupova, ranked 84th nationally, leading No. 78 Carolina Lampl and Kimberly Yee 5-4. In singles play the Cardinal captured three straight-set victories to seal the match. At No. 6, No. 109 Emily Higuchi defeated Ates, 6-0, 6-2, while No. 51 Arbuthnott defeated Mylonas, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4. AT No. 1, two of the nation's most talented freshmen went at it as No. 16 Gordon captured two close sets against No. 26 Bayerlova for the victory. The remaining three matches were abandoned as Lord was leading Yusupova, 6-3, 6-6 at No. 2, Michalkova and Lampl were tied 5-7, 6-4 at No. 3 and Miksovska was trailing Shin 2-6, 3-2 at No. 5. The Cougars will now wait to hear their postseason fate as the 2018 NCAA Women's Tennis Selection Show will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. PT.

"It was a tough match today against a very good Stanford team. I am extremely proud of what our team has accomplished this season but mostly for how it represents Washington State University on and off the court. We will now wait for the NCAA Selection Show on Tuesday and hope to have the opportunity to keep playing. Go Cougs."

  • With the loss the Cougars end the regular season with a 21-7 record, the most wins in program history.
  • WSU lost the doubles point for just the fifth time in 28 matches this season.
  • Freshman Michaela Bayerlova is now 7-4 against nationally-ranked players.
  • Washington State was playing in its first conference semifinal.
