The Cougars Travel to California to Face USC and UCLA

THIS WEEK: The Cougars travel to Los Angeles, Calif. to continue Pac-12 Conference play at USC, Friday March 23 at 1:30 p.m. and UCLA Saturday March 24 at noon. WSU will start the weekend against USC at the Marks Tennis Stadium and follow play the following day at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Cougars enter the week at No. 39 with a 16-1 record, USC at No. 41 with a 8-5 record and UCLA is 13 with a 10-4 record.


UP NEXT: WSU continues play in Pullman at the Simmelink Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse against Utah Friday, March 30 at 1:30 p.m. and Colorado Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m. The Cougars are 7-7 all-time against Utah and 4-4 all-time against Colorado.


LAST WEEK: WSU posted a pair of victories two weeks ago against No. 22 Oregon and Portland. The Cougars now sit with a 16-1 record for the season. Despite losing the opening doubles point against Oregon, WSU ended the match with a 4-3 victory. The Cougars continued play against Portland extending its winning streak to nine matches, its longest since opening the 2016 season with 12 consecutive victories, and finished the day with a 5-2 victory. WSU improved to 14-0 all-time against Portland.
 
BAYERLOVA RANKED 43 IN ITA NATIONAL SINGLES: Following the most recent ITA singles rankings, freshmen Michaela Bayerlova came in at No. 43, up six spots from the most recent ranking of 49. Bayerlova was No. 54 in the first of 2018 ITA National Singles rankings and rose to 34, her highest ITA ranking thus far.
 
BAYERLOVA NAMED PAC-12 WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For the second time this season, WSU freshman Michaela Bayerlova was named the Pac-12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Feb. 27. Bayerlova earned her first Pac-12's Women's Tennis Player of the Week Jan. 23. This season, Bayerlova is 3-0 against nationally ranked players and has lost just one set all season in her 20 singles matches. Bayerlova is the sixth player at WSU under Head Coach Lisa Hart to receive player of the week honors.
 
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2017-18 season the Cougars will have two new players to accompany the five returners. The returning roster consists of senior Barbora Michalkova, junior Aneta Miksovska, and sophomores Melisa Ates and Ege Tomey and Guzal Yusupova. The returning players will be joined by junior Tiffany Mylonas and freshman Michaela Bayerlova.
 
BAYERLOVA CAPTURES TITLE AT ITF CHARLESTON: Freshman Michaela Bayerlova gained her second career title at the ITF Charleston Tournament on Oct. 1. Seeded No. 5, she defeated No. 1 seed Montserrat Gonzalez in the championship match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Gonzalez entered the tournament with a singles world ranking of 438. With Bayerlova's victory, her world ranking now stands at 629.
 
COUGARS IN INITIAL ITA RANKINGS: Freshman Michaela Bayerlova was ranked No. 3 among freshmen/newcomers in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings and junior Tiffany Mylonas was ranked No. 90 in the ITA preseason singles poll. Bayerlova is the first Cougar to enter the freshman/newcomer rankings since the ranking began in the fall of 2010. Mylonas is WSU's most recent player to be ranked for preseason singles since junior Elizaveta Luzina in 2014.
 
COACH HART: Lisa Hart is entering her 15th season as the head coach at Washington State. Hart has accumulated 197 wins over her tenure, the most victories in school history. In 2012, the Cougars went 19-7 as Hart was awarded the Pac-12 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year award.
