WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Washington State Cross Country programs competed in the 2018 NCAA West Regional Friday at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, where the WSU women placed 12th overall, and the men took home seventh.
WSU WOMEN
The Washington State women's program, currently ranked 13th overall in the west region, placed 12th in the 6k race against some of the top programs in the nation in the west regional.
The top runner for the Cougars was Vallery Korir who finished 49th overall with a time of 20:59.6 in the race. Oregon finished first overall at the 2018 NCAA West Regional with 44 overall points, followed by Boise State with 49, and Stanford in third with 95 total points.
"We had some good runs on Friday, and I am very impressed by our two freshman Emma, and Zorana; not only in this race but in the entire season," coach Wayne Phipps discussed.
WSU MEN
The men's program, currently ranked No. 22 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA), finished seventh overall in the 10k race against top tier competition.
Leading the way for the Cougars once again was senior Chandler Teigen finishing 27th overall with a time of 30:05.5. Amir Ado followed his fellow teammate with a finish of 39th overall at 30:21.0. The Cougars then saw Colton Johnsen place 49th overall. (30:37.2). WSU would then see Paul Ryan (30:41.0), Nathan Wadhwani (30:42.7), and Justin Janke (30:45.5) all following up placing 53rd, 55th, and 59th respectively. Kyler Little rounded out the Cougars in 65th place with a time of 30:51.4.
Portland took home the number one spot at the 2018 NCAA West Regional with 77 total points, followed by Washington in second with 82, and Boise State in third overall with 102 points scored.
"We had some misfortune on the men's side with two of our runners falling quite hard during the race," Coach Phipps continued. "Typically seventh would be sufficient to secure an at-large bid especially this year with seven teams in the region in the top 24 in the nation. They had a great season securing nine wins against team that qualified for nationals, including several wins by hundreds of points. That number of wins would have qualified in in any other year. We understand and appreciate the qualification system but it is still a tough pill to swallow to see this team, and a team such as UCLA not at the national championships."

Coach Phipps continued, "I am very proud of both the women's and men's teams; they are an extremely talented, dedicated and hard working group of student-athletes. I am excited for their track seasons and for their 2019 cross country season which will be highlighted with us hosting the NCAA West regional championships."
