Cougars Will Close Fall Season Saturday

WSU rowing will compete in the last regatta of the fall season at Spokane.

WSU ROWING HEADS NORTH TO SPOKANE: The Washington State University women's rowing team is making the short trek north to Spokane, to compete in its last fall regatta against Gonzaga and Oregon State at the Spokane River on Saturday, Nov. 3.

REGATTA AGAINST GONZAGA/OREGON STATE: WSU will send three varsity eight boats, two novice eight boats and two varsity four boats...racing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Gonzaga Boathouse on the Spokane River...the race is in head format, in which the boats start at intervals, racing both the clock and each other...the regatta is hosted by the Gonzaga rowing team...the race covers a 5-kilometer stretch of the Spokane River.

LAST TIME AGAINST GONZAGA: WSU's women's rowing team had a strong showing at the Head of the Spokane on Oct. 13th against Gonzaga...the Cougars raced two varsity eights, two novice eights, two varsity fours, and three pairs...Washington State's varsity eight finished the 5-kilometer head race with a time of 17 minutes and 40 seconds (17:40)…the second varsity eight notched a time of 18:53…the second novice eight completed the course in a time of 21:02, while the Cougars' first novice eight clocked a time of 21:11, placing first and second respectively ahead of Gonzaga's first and second novice eight...Washington State's first varsity four and second varsity four took first and third in their class (women's fours) and finished in times of 18:31 and 19:32 respectively...Washington State also raced three pairs, the first of which finished their race in a time of 20:20 to secure second place...the second pair clocked a time of 20:37 followed by the third pair with a time of 20:40 to earn fourth and fifth place.

WSU HEAD COACH JANE LARIVIERE ON FACING GONZAGA AND OREGON STATE AGAIN: "The first time we raced them  we were in pairs and the second time we raced them we were in fours. Our lineups have been continually shifting around based on the personnel available. Even though we're racing them again in fours it's going to be a new deal because we're all in different lineups."

WSU HEAD COACH JANE LARIVIERE ON THE LAST FALL REGATTA: "We're focusing on being fast, it's the culmination of all of the training that we've done all fall, and it's our last race and our last time on the water until the end of January, so we want to go out with a bang and make it really count."

LAST TIME ON THE WATER: The Cougars competed at the Portland Fall Classic and raced two varsity eight boats and four varsity four boats...the first varsity four boat placed first in the women's collegiate varsity 4+ with a time of 18:05 followed by Oregon State who captured second place with a time of 18:24...WSU's second varsity four boat secured third place with a time of 18:33...in the women's collegiate JV 4+ flight, WSU's third and fourth varsity four boats placed first and second respectively with times of 18:41 and 18:46...the varsity eight boat placed third in the women's collegiate Div. I varsity 8+ flight with a time of 17:50...in the women's collegiate Div. I JV 8+ flight, WSU's second varsity eight captured second place with a time of 17:58, right behind Oregon State who took first with a time of 17:48...nearly a whole minute ahead of the Portland which secured third place with a time of 18:52.

COACHING STAFF: Jane LaRiviere is in her 17th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 12 NCAA Championships under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach Karl Huhta, assistant/novice coach Brandon Campbell, assistant coach Dave Kempsell, coordinator of operations Amy Vanbuskirk, and graduate assistant Olivia Hecimovich...Huhta is in his fifth year with the Cougars, and second year as associate head coach...Campbell is entering his fourth year....Kempsell comes in for his second year, his first as an assistant coach with the Cougars after serving as the graduate assistant last year.

NEXT UP FOR THE COUGARS: WSU closes their fall season with this regatta and will return to competition in the spring.
