Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to Four, Downs No. 21 Arizona

Woodford records kill number 1,000 in five-set victory

WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE
TUCSON, Ariz.  --  The No. 22 ranked Cougars of Washington State (13-3, 4-2 Pac-12) continued its' winning streak after downing No. 21 overall Arizona on the road inside the McKale Center Sunday afternoon.

Set scores for the match were: 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, and 15-13 in favor of Washington State.

This Pac-12 battle between the Cougars and the Wildcats featured a close contest early in set number one with both squads trading points, until Arizona was able to generate a 3-0 run to push their lead out to 11-6. WSU continued to surge right back into the scoring mix as McKenna Woodford went on to lead the Cougs in the opening set with six kills, which also pushed her over 1,000 total kills in her Washington State career, becoming the 15th player all-time to do so, and joining teammate Taylor Mims. Unfortunately the Wildcats were able to create multiple small runs down the stretch in set one, as Arizona took it at 25-20 overall.

The Cougars jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the second set of play with kills from Jocelyn Urias, and Mims to fuel the offensive attack. Arizona built a small run of their own to tie up the contest, but another 3-0 WSU run put the Cougs back into control, as multiple Wildcat errors and another Urias kill surged Washington State ahead. The Wildcats took over late in the set however, with a 7-2 run to close out the second round of action with a 25-22 set victory.

Set number three once again saw the Wildcats building a steady lead as Arizona held multiple four point advantages early on in this set. The Cougars fought back with some explosive offense to generate a 6-2 run late, with kills from Mims, Woodford, and Urias to claim set three at 25-23 overall.

Washington State continued to use that momentum from the previous set to claim a 10-9 lead over Arizona early in the set, after a 4-0 run, with kills from Claire Martin, Ella Lajos, and Mims gave the Cougs the advantage. Arizona started climbing back into the set and did tie up the contest late, but the Cougars held strong with a 5-1 run to end set four at 25-20 with the help from multiple Woodford kills.

The final set of this match featured the Cougars continuing to ride their momentum, and not take the foot off the gas pedal, jumping out to a 5-1 lead over the Wildcats. Arizona mounted a comeback late in the contest however to eventually tie up set five at 13-13. WSU remained focused and a kill from Woodford gave the advantage back to the Cougs, and the conference win was sealed off with a block from Urias and Woodford.
