LONG BEACH, Calif. – Washington State captured four of six singles matches and all three five doubles matches on the opening day of the 2018 Long Beach Fall Invitational Friday afternoon.
 
In the Flight A Singles, senior Tiffany Mylonas rebounded from a slow start to post a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Cal State Northridge's Skyla Alcon in the opening round. WSU Freshman Hikaru Sato looked strong in the second set but could not continue that into the third as she dropped her opening match, 6-4, 1-6, 7-4 to Cal State Fullerton's Casey Lee Emery.
 
Both WSU participants in Flight B Singles recorded straight-set wins. Freshman Yang Lee defeated Nina Nikitovic of Portland State, 6-4, 6-3, while junior Melisa Ates needed a first-set tiebreaker before defeating Grand Canyon's Martina LoPumo, 7-6 (1), 7-5.
 
In the Flight C Singles, senior Aneta Miksovska had no trouble getting past Cal State Northridge's Sibel Demirbaga, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Ege Tomey fell in her first match as Long Beach State's Emma Bardet posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
 
In doubles play, Mylonas and Sato advanced to the semifinals of Flight A with a pair of wins. In the first round, the duo defeated LoPumo and Autum Prudhomme of Grand Canyon, 6-3, before a 6-3 win over Fullerton's Masako Makiba and Jadie Acidera. Also in Flight A, Lee and Miksovska defeated Alcon and Tobosa from Cal State Northridge, 6-3, in the opening round before a 6-2 win over Zara Lennon and Wiktoria Rutkowska of Long Beach State.
