Late Woes Cost the Cougars in Tempe

WSU fell 3-1 in a rough finish against the Sun Devils.

TEMPE, Ariz. – In a rough final 20 minutes of action in Tempe, Ariz. the No. 22 ranked Washington State soccer team (10-4-0, 3-4-0) suffered a late game loss to Arizona State (7-5-1, 2-3-1) as the Sun Devils scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 win Thursday afternoon. In addition to the late goals, the Cougs also sustained an array of late game injuries as WSU's day went from bad to worse as the clock ticked down to zero. For WSU, two of the Sun Devils goals came as the results of free kicks while the game-winner came on a counter-attack in the run of play. Prior to the three late goals for the Sun Devils the Cougars appeared in control of the game, pressing the attack and holding the shot advantage before and after freshman Molly Myers put WSU on the board first with a goal just :14 seconds before overtime. The goal was her second-consecutive goal after scoring against No. 2 USC in WSU's prior matchup as she captured a bounding ball in the offensive third and dribbled through a pair of Sun Devil defenders before hitting the back of the net.
