Cougars Fall to Defending National Champions Stanford at Home

PULLMAN, WASH. - Washington State swimming fell to defending back-to-back national champions Stanford at Gibb Pool Friday, 169-86.

Nine Cougars set season-best times in their respective events, while nine also recorded top-three finishes in their individual events. Stanford, the defending back-to-back national champions, entered the week ranked No. 1 in the country and broke three Gibb Pool records.

Leading the way for the Cougars with 10 individual points, including three individual top-three finishes was sophomore Taylor McCoy. The Pullman, Wash. native set season-best times in the 100 and 200 back. McCoy finished second behind Erin Voss from Stanford in the 200 back, and later clocked third place finishes in the 100 back and 400 IM. McCoy was also a member of the fourth place 200 medley relay team, alongside teammates Mackenzie Duarte, Sophia Balmaceda, and Payton Bokowy.

Senior Jasmine Margetts notched second place finishes in the 200 fly and 400 IM. The Torrance, Calif. native notched a season-best in the 200 fly, and less than two seconds behind Hannah Kukurugya from Stanford. Margetts anchored the 400 free relay with teammates Keiana Fountaine, Emily Barrier, and Paige Gardner. Margetts also swam the opening leg of the third place 200 medley relay team. Clocking in at 1:44.85, the team of Margetts, Linnea Lindberg, Balmaceda, and Chloe Larson sat just behind the second place team from Stanford.

Freshman Keiana Fountaine continued her success in the pool with three individual top-five finishes. The Tracy, Calif. native notched a second place finish in the 100 free, third place in the 100 fly, and fourth place in the 200 free.

The Cougars will dive back into the pool Sunday, Oct. 14 to take on the reigning Mountain West Conference Champions Boise State. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m.
