Cougars Host Idaho and Montana State, their first Homestand of the Spring Season

THIS WEEK: The Washington State women's tennis team returns to Pullman to host Idaho and Montana State at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse Saturday, Jan. 20. The Idaho match begins at 11 a.m. with Montana State to follow at 5 p.m. Fans attending the Idaho match will receive complimentary coffee and donuts and the first 50 fans will receive a gray WSU logo Tumbler Cup. Those who attend the Montana State match will receive free pizza, as supplies last, and the first 50 fans of the match will also receive a gray WSU Tumbler Cup.

UP NEXT: The Cougars make their way to Missoula for two matches against Montana, Friday Jan. 26, at 8 a.m. PT and 2 p.m. PT. Last season the Cougars pulled off a 7-0 victory against Montana Jan. 21, 2017. Washington State continues play Sunday, Jan. 28 in Missoula against Iowa. Iowa finished last season 16-9 and begins dual match play Saturday.

LAST WEEK: The Cougars opened the 2017 season with a combined 17-3 singles record and a 6-3 doubles mark at the Weinman Foundation Invitational in Hawaii. New-coming freshmen Michaela Bayerlova went undefeated and gained the Green Bracket title. Sophomore Guzal Yusupova went 3-0 during the three-day event. The Cougars captured seven of the nine matches that concluded the tournament.

FALL SEASON RECAP: The 2017 fall season began with play at the UNLV Fall Invitational. Newcomer Tiffany Mylonas and returning player Melisa Ates captured the flight two doubles title. Michaela Bayerlova captured title at ITF Charleston after defeating No 1 seed Montserrat Gonzalez who entered the competition with a world ranking of 438. At the Beach Fall Tennis Tournament in Long Beach, Calif. both Tiffany Mylonas and Aneta Miksovska captured singles titles, Mylonas at No. 1 and Miksovska at No. 2. Also at the Beach Fall Tennis Tournament duo Melisa Ates and Barbora Michalkova won their consolation doubles match, and Melisa Ates won her consolation match as singles. At the 2018 Weinman Foundation Invitational Washington State captured seven of the nine matches during the final day of play and Cougar freshman Michaela Bayerlova was the winner for the Green Bracket after going undefeated for the duration of the tournament. Following are the records for the Cougars: Melisa Ates (9-4), Michaela Bayerlova (5-0), Barbora Michalkova (10-3), Aneta Miksovska (10-3), Tiffany Mylonas (12-1), Ege Tomey (6-3) and Guzal Yusupova (6-0).

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2017-18 season the Cougars will have two new players to accompany the five returners. The returning roster consists of senior Barbora Michalkova, junior Aneta Miksovska, and sophomores Melisa Ates and Ege Tomey and Guzal Yusupova. The returning players will be joined by junior Tiffany Mylonas and freshman Michaela Bayerlova.

COUGARS ADD TWO TO ROSTER: Tiffany Mylonas joins the team as a junior after transferring from the University of Louisiana, Monroe, where she spent the previous two seasons. She achieved a 30-5 singles record last season and an 11 match winning streak to open dual match play. Incoming freshman Michaela Bayerlova had a promising summer as she reached a career best world ranking of 583 in singles following her win at the Alkmaar Futures event in Alkmaar, Netherlands, June 25.

BAYERLOVA CAPTURES TITLE AT ITF CHARLESTON: Freshman Michaela Bayerlova gained her second career title at the ITF Charleston Tournament on Oct. 1. Seeded No. 5, she defeated No. 1 seed Montserrat Gonzalez in the championship match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Gonzalez entered the tournament with a singles world ranking of 438. With Bayerlova's victory, her world ranking now stands at 629.
COUGARS IN ITA RANKINGS: Bayerlova was ranked No. 3 among freshmen/newcomers in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings and junior Tiffany Mylonas was ranked No. 90 in the ITA preseason singles poll. Bayerlova is the first Cougar to receive this title since the ranking began in the fall of 2010. Mylonas is WSU's most recent player to be ranked for preseason singles since junior Elizaveta Luzina in 2014.

LAST SEASON IN REVIEW: Guzal Yusupova finished the 2017 spring season with an 18-8 singles record and a team best 5-2 record in Pac-12 play. Aneta Miksovska finished last season with a 19-10 singles record and had back-to-back wins over nationally ranked players from ASU and Arizona. Cougar freshman Michaela Bayerlova had a successful summer and enters the season with a current singles world ranking of 629, and achieved a career best of 583 during the summer.

COACH HART: Lisa Hart is entering her 15th season as the head coach at Washington State. Hart has accumulated 181 wins over her tenure, finishing the last season with a 10-16 record. In 2012, the Cougars went 19-7 as Hart was awarded the Pac-12 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year award.
