NAMPA, Idaho / SEATTLE -- The Washington State Track & Field teams sent split squads to two meets to open the 2018 indoor season: the Ed Jacoby Invitational hosted by Boise State at the Jacksons Indoor Facility in Nampa, Idaho, and the UW Indoor Preview at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle.

Cougars weight throwers
Aoife Martin and
Brock Eager event victories, and sprinter
Ja'Maun Charles' double-wins, were among the highlights for WSU in Nampa. Friday night Martin (Rs-So., Seattle) won the women's 20-pound weight throw with a four-foot PR and the eighth-best throw in WSU history of 56-feet 4 3/4 inches (17.19m). Saturday, Eager (Rs-Jr., Renton) won the men's 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 65-2 (19.86m), a mark that is among the top 25 in the nation.
Amani Brown (Rs-Jr., Seattle) was the runner-up in the men's weight throw with a five-foot PR throw of 57-6 1/4Â (17.53m).

Charles (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) won the men's 60m dash in a time of 6.79 seconds and won the 200m dash in a time of 21.72.
Zach Smith (Sr., Bremerton) was the runner-up in both races with a 60m time of 6.89, just 1/100th second off his PR time, and a 200m PR time of 21.73. Freshman
Brandon Bains (Mountain View, Calif.) was fourth in the 60m (6.99) and third in the 200m (21.98).

Also grabbing victories for the men at the Jacoby were
Jake Ulrich (Fr., East Wenatchee) in the 400m (48.95),
Nick Johnson (So., Spokane) 60m hurdles (PR 7.98) and the 4x400m relay of
Christapherson Grant,
Corey Allen,
Cody Kjarmo and Ulrich (3:19.52).
Stephanie Cho (Jr., Vancouver, B.C.) won the women's 400m with a PR time of 56.35. WSU alum
Kiana Davis, competing for Team Interstellar, won the women's triple jump with a PR leap of 42-10 1/4 (13.06m).

WSU highlights from the UW Indoor Preview meet Saturday include
Molly Scharmann (Rs-So., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) tied for fourth in the pole vault with a clearance at 12-10 (3.91m), just under her PR of 13-0 1/4 (3.97m). On the oval, freshman
Kiyena Beatty (Temecula, Calif.) was 12th in the mile in a time of 5:08.39,
Natalie Ackerley (Rs-So., Bainbridge, Wash.) was fourth in the 800m (2:16.53),
Grace Victor (Rs-So., Wakerley, Australia) was sixth in the 800m (2:16.10), and
Josie Brown (Jr., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) led the WSU women in the 3000m with her 32nd place finish (10:12.46).

Keelan Halligan (Jr., Bothell, Wash.) was fourth in the high jump after clearing the bar at 6-6 3/4 (2.00m) and freshman
Beau Sheeran (Beaverton, Ore.) placed eighth in the high jump with a bar clearance at 6-2 3/4 (1.90m). On the track, freshman
Zach Stallings (Reno) was fifth in the 800m (1:55.71),
John Whelan (Rs-Sr., Etna, Calif.) was 17th in the mile (4:11.24),
Paul Ryan (Rs-So., Moscow, Idaho) was 18th and led a large contingent of Cougars in the 3000m (8:23.43).

NOTEWORTHY:
- Cougars achieved eight collegiate Personal Record marks (PRs) at Nampa and one at Seattle.
- WSU will have split squad competitions two more times this season.
- The WSU Open meet, the first of two home indoor meets in 2018, is Jan. 19-20 in the WSU Indoor Practice Facility.
