PULLMAN, Wash. –Â
PULLMAN, Wash. – Three first half goals and 90 minutes of fast-paced action kicked off Pac-12 play at Lower Soccer Field as the Cougs (5-2-2) were edged, 2-1, by No. 2 Stanford (8-1-0) Thursday night. The Cardinal became the first team to score on WSU at home as they scored a pair of early goals before
Maddy Haro answered back with a penalty strike in the 35' to put the Cougs on the board. Down 2-1 at the half, the Cougs had one big chance in the second half to tie the game, but a second awarded penalty kick was stopped by Stanford's Alison Jahansouz, preserving the Cardinal's one-goal advantage. Neither side would break through in the second half as both defenses were up to the task with
Ella Dederick posting four second-half saves to give WSU a chance at the comeback.
Coach's Quote Of The Match
"They're a very good team. Stanford is an awesome team and they had a lot of shots tonight, but we did a lot tonight to disrupt play. I've never seen a Stanford team play so many balls out of the back with the pressure we applied to them. Unfortunately, we missed some opportunities we should have capitalized on. This burns. Washington State is not here to just be okay, we are here to be great. Though they're the high team in the rankings we felt like we had a good fight tonight and a good plan and we're disappointed with the loss."
