Both will compete with the women's four and women's eight crews.
VICTORIA, British Columbia – Former Washington State rowers Nicole Hare and Lisa Roman have been chosen to represent Canada at the 2017 World Rowing Championships, Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) announced Wednesday.Â
Both Hare and Roman have been named to both the women's eight and women's four crews for the championships which will be held at Sarasota-Bradenton, Fla., Sept. 24-Oct. 1, 2017. Both members of the 2016 Canadian Olympic team, Hare (Calgary, Alberta) and Roman (Langley, B.C.) will be joined in the eight by fellow Olympians, Susanne Grainger, Hillary Janssens, Jennifer Martins and Christine Roper, as well as Paralympic bronze-medalist, Kristen Kit as coxswain. Kristin Bauder and Rebecca Zimmerman will also participate with the eight crew. Â Grainger and Roper will join Hare and Roman in the four.Â
Hare (Calgary, Alberta) finished her fourth and final season with the Cougars in 2017, having rowed with the varsity eight crew her entire career. She redshirted the 2015-16 season as she took a year off to train for the 2016 Olympic Games with Canada. Every year that Hare has been on the team, the Cougars have advanced to the NCAA Rowing Championships.Â
As a freshman in 2013, Hare was instrumental in getting WSU back to the NCAA Championships after a one-year drought, as she helped lead the varsity eight and the team to 14th-place finishes. The following season Hare's varsity eight crew finished 15th at the NCAA Championships, while the team placed 14th. The following season, 2015, the then-junior guided WSU to its second-best team finish in school history as the Cougars placed eighth and the varsity eight crew finished ninth. Â As a redshirt senior in 2017, Hare helped lead the varsity eight crew to a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships as WSU placed 14th as a team.Â
A transfer from University of the Fraser Valley, Roman competed with the Cougar varsity rowing team for three seasons, rowing in the varsity boat all three years (2010-12). She is a two-time all-conference honoree, and in 2012 was named to the CRCA All-West Region First Team and the Pocock All-America Second Team. She was a member of Canada's women's eight at the 2016 Olympic Games. In 2015-16, Roman was named to the Pac-12's All-Century Women's Rowing Team. Roman has been competing with the Canadian National Team since 2014. Prior to that she rowed for Canada's Western Rowing Club at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2011 and in the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in 2011.Â
RCA's 2017 National Team is led by men's head coach, Terry Paul and women's head coach, Dave Thompson. Thompson will be supported by senior national team coach Michelle Darvill, while Paul will be supported by senior assistant national team coaches Roger Meager and Jeremy Ivey. Nominated crews will participate in a pre-World Championships training camp in Welland, Ontario, Sept. 10-20, prior to departing directly for Florida.
CBC Sports will stream the semifinals and finals of the regatta from Friday, September 29 to Sunday, October 1. WorldRowing.com will also stream the A/B Semifinals on Friday and the A-Finals on Saturday and Sunday. Start lists, live tracking and audio commentary can also be found at WorldRowing.com.
