Brooks-Johnson Wins Pac-12 Heptathlon Title for Second Time

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Washington State's Alissa Brooks-Johnson won the women's heptathlon Sunday at the Pac-12 Combined Events Championships at Oregon State's Whyte Track & Field Center in Corvallis.

Brooks-Johnson, a redshirt junior from Doty, Wash., scored a season-high 5,638 points to win the conference heptathlon title for the second time in three championships. Brooks-Johnson ended the first day's competition with the lead at 3,352 points. Sunday she long jumped a hyper-wind-aided 18-feet 7 inches (5.66m), threw the javelin a season-best distance of 138-6 (42.22m), and ran the 800m in a time of 2 minutes 19.57 seconds.

"It was at first a little nerve-racking due to the fact I didn't compete indoors and got a late start," Brooks-Johnson said. "Overall I came back competing pretty well, but not where I want to be yet. There's still a lot of track to be run. I'm thankful to be the defending champion for the women's heptathlon this 2017."

Harper, a senior from Missoula, Mont., started the day in second place with 3,300 points but fell, literally and figuratively, out of the scoring Sunday. Harper long jumped 17-6 1/4 (5.34m) and threw the javelin 99-5 (30.31m). But she met disaster in the 800m run, falling and recovering to finish next to last in the race in a time of 2:37.52, far behind her PR time of 2:14.03 and her season-best 2:17.53. Harper's final total of 5,038 points was ninth place.

Lindsey Schauble (sophomore, Kennewick, Wash.) finished in 11th place with a PR total of 4,741 points. Sunday Schauble long jumped a season-best distance of 17-6 (5.33m), threw the javelin 98-10 (30.12m), and ran the 800m in a time of 2:25.21.

"It was a bittersweet meet," WSU Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Wayne Phipps said. "It was very exciting to see Alissa repeat as Pac-12 Champion but on the other hand it was a battle for Liz. After putting herself in a great position after day one, Liz battled through a lingering knee injury through the long jump and javelin. Then was tripped and fell very hard in the 800m. Being the tough competitor she is, Liz got up and still finished and still almost scored"

The Pac-12 Track & Field Championships will be held May 13 and 14 in Eugene.
