LUBBOCK, Texas – Washington State women's golf junior,
Alivia Brown, shot her best round, 1-under par (71), in the third and final round to finish tied for 25th,Wednesday, at the 2017 Division I Women's Golf Lubbock Regional at The Rawls Course.
Brown missed out on advancing to the NCAA Championships by 5 strokes, as the top-three individuals unattached from one of the top-six qualifying teams, advanced to the NCAA Championships. The three advancing as individuals are Julienne Soo of Oklahoma (-3, 213), Susie Cavanagh of Oregon State (-1, 215) and Alex White of BYU (-1, 215). Each of those three competed with their respective teams, however, their teams did not finish in the top-six, as Oregon State finished seventh, Oklahoma ninth and BYU 12th. Arizona State swept the top-three positions as Monica Vaughn won the tournament (-8, 208), followed by her teammates Olivia Mehaffey (-7, 209) and Linnea Strom (-6, 210).
Arizona State continued its dominance as it captured the team championship at 22-under par (842). Furman was second (-1, 863), followed by Oregon (+3, 867), Texas (+5, 869), Texas Tech +9, 873) and Kent State (+11, 875), as those six all advance to the NCAA Championships, May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms, at Sugar Grove, Ill., hosted by Northern Illinois.Â
Brown started the day tied for 28th at +5, 149 after the first two rounds Monday and Tuesday. Â Teeing off from the first hole Wednesday, Brown was even to par following the front nine. She birdied the 10th and 17th holes, entering the final hole at 2-under for the day, 3-over for the tournament. Brown bogeyed the 18th hole and finished the back nine 1-under for -1 (71) on the day.
A native of Gig Harbor, Wash., Brown ends her season after averaging 73.63 strokes per round, which is the lowest season scoring average for the Cougars in school history. She notched five top-15 finishes, including three in the top-5 this season. This marked her second appearance at the NCAA Regionals, as she became the only Cougar to be selected to two as an individual during her career.Â
