WSU’s Comeback Falls Just Short against Arizona

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State tennis' bid for its first conference win fell one match short as Arizona pulled out a three-set win at No. 6 to secure a 4-3 victory over the Cougars Sunday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

Trailing 3-0, the Cougars (9-12, 0-7 Pac-12 ) mounted a furious comeback that started at No. 2 singles where Guzal Yusupova returned to the winning track as she blew open a close match with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 win at No. 2 over Samantha Czarniak. It was her seventh win in her last eight decisions and improved her season dual record to 14-4.

Aneta Miksovska completed a strong win at No. 3 as she defeated No. 118 Corley, 6-4, 6-7 (7-1), 6-4, brining WSU to within one at 3-2. Moments later Melisa Ates evened the match at 3-3 as she defeated Marie Van Aelst, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5, setting the stage for No. 6 where WSU's Ege Tomey and Arizona's Sophia Thomas were locked in a tight battle. After taking the first set 6-4, Tomey could not close out the second as Thomas won 7-5, forcing a third set. Thomas gained an early break of serve then added a second as she clinched the win, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Leading 1-0 heading into singles, Arizona (11-9, 2-5)  increased its lead to 2-0 as the Wildcats' Marker, ranked No. 27 nationally, pulled out a 6-1, 6-4 win over Michalkova at No. 1. The lead increased to 3-0 when Camila Wesbrooks posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Victoria Matejevic at No. 4.

The Wildcats captured the opening doubles with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 1, the Wildcat duo of Marker and Corley cruised to a 6-1 victory over Miksovska and Matejevic. The Cougars evened it up at No. 2 where Michalkova and Ates defeated Wesbrooks and Thomas, 6-3, setting the stage for No. 3. Arizona's pair of Czarniak and Van Aelst rallied from 0-3 down to post a 7-5 win over Yusupova and Tomey, securing the opening point.
