No. 36 Arizona State Fights Off Cougars

PULLMAN, Wash. – In a match much closer than the outcome, the Washington State women's tennis team dropped a tough, 4-1 decision to No. 36 Arizona State Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

On an afternoon that saw four of the top five singles matches go three sets, it was the Sun Devils (11-5, 4-2 Pac-12) that found a way to pull them out. WSU's (9-11, 0-6 Pac-12) lone victory came at No. 3 where Aneta Miksovska mounted a furious comeback to win 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 over No. 88 Kelley Anderson. The win snapped a three-match skid for the Cougar sophomore, who picked up her second conference win of the season and first against a ranked opponent.

With the Sun Devils leading 3-0, the clinching match came at No. 2 singles where WSU's Guzal Yusupova and ASU's Sammi Hampton, ranked No. 80, were in a tight battle. Yusupova captured the first set 6-4 before Hampton captured the second, 7-5. In the third it went back and forth before Yusupova took a 5-4 lead. She did not hold on as Hampton broke her twice in the final three games for the 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory.

In other singles action Nicole Fossa-Huergo posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Victoria Matejevic at No. 4. At No. 1, Kassidy Jump, ranked No. 61 nationally, and Barbora Michalkova were locked in a great battle. After dropping the first set 6-1, Michalkova roared back, winning the second 6-4 and taking a 5-3 lead in the third. Jump rebounded to take the final four games for the three-set victory.

At No. 5, Melisa Ates was trailing 1-6, 6-2, 1-3 to Savannah Slaysman when the match was stopped once the team outcome was decided. At No. 6, Ege Tomey was early in the first set against Gussie O'Sullivan, trailing 1-2 when play was halted.

Doubles play started the afternoon and Arizona State took a quick lead. At No. 1, the duo of Fossa-Huergo and Alexandra Osbourne, ranked No. 83 nationally, had little trouble with WSU's Miksovska and Victoria Matejevic, winning 6-0. At No. 3, ASU's Jump and Hampton edged Yusupova and Tomey, 7-5, to clinch the doubles point. The match at No. 2, between WSU's Michalkova and Ates, and ASU's No. 72-ranked duo of Kelley Anderson and Slaysman, was stopped with ASU leading 6-5.
